Oil from Exhaust

Found a great deal on a 1995 Sea Doo SPX 650 last year. The guy wanted $200 for the ski, said it needed a jug. I purchased the ski and tore down the jugs. Turns out there was bad scoring in the jug due to lack of oil but evidently he ran the ski like that because the rings actually wore into the grooves. I wanted to be sure of what I had before sinking money into it so I tracked the problem down to a dryrotted oil line from the oil pump. Replaced the oil lines and reassembled the engine for compression test. Results were 137 psi and 97 psi. Decided to verify the rest of the engine, attempted to start engine and it actually started and ran great. We then proceeded to use the ski like that last season with no problems. I then wintirized the ski for winter. Just the other day I was getting the ski ready for the lake and found I needed to rebuild the carbs. Rebuilt the carbs and now the ski still runs great but smokes a lot. Also getting black oil out the exhaust. I have only ran it for maybe 10 minutes and have not taken it to the lake yet. Could this be something normal or possibly something else has turned up? I already have one guy trying to sell me a rotary shaft seal and says that will fix the problem.

I plan to rebuild the engine but just do not have the funds at the moment, was hoping to get another season out of it first. We dont spend much time at the lake and will only put maybe 20 hours total on the water during the season.

If it's the first time starting it for the season that sounds normal take it out for a test ride and see how it does but your top end does need to be rebuilt

Thats what I was thinking. I figured it could possibly be from sitting over the winter. We are about an hour away from anywhere to ride but will be taking it and see how it does. I just wanted to see if it could be a sign of anything major. After all, it is a 2 stroke and they can be weird at times.

Yes I plan to rebuild the entire engine. At a minimum I will at least do the top end, there is just too much difference in compression between the two cylinders. I am currently weighing my options now. I know I can come out cheaper by simply purchasing a rebuilt engine but just cant drop that amount of cash right now. My end up purchasing a little here and there until I have everything and then do a complete rebuild. Never realized how expensive 2 stroke engine were or why until now. The V-8 in my truck would surely blow if I ran it at the RPMs that this engine can run at. lol

It is possible your rotary shaft seals bad but it will smoke more when u first start it after sitting and clear up after it runs a bit so if it clears up I wouldn't worry till u rebuild it and as for marine engines they take quite a beating and keep on tickin it's a amazing thing

Also, one other thing I noticed. When I shut the engine off there is a very slight squeak. Maybe for a split second. It doesnt do this every time I shut it off, just every once in a while. For instance, yesterday I started it and stopped it about 10 times and heard the squeak twice. It doesnt sound bad but has me concerned. Otherwise the engine runs great.

Make sure your pto and hull bearing is greased.

Oil at the beginning of a season is kind of normal...the oil seeps past the inner crank seals and then if it isnt a lot, you start it and it burns it/pumps it out.

If it is bad enough to lock up the motor after sitting a week...then you have a problem.

Oops, I forgot to grease those, and didnt grease them at all last year. My first ski and didnt think anything about those last year. Saw them again yesterday and my first thought was I need to purchase a grease gun so I can check those. Newbie mistake, I admit it. lol

When I first attempted to start it the engine did act like it was locked up. I checked the battery and only had around 8 volts in it. I charged the battery and tried again and it started right up. Excellent, thanks for the info.

Now to grease some fittings. :-)

Yes..do dont wanna see the damage that occurs when the bearing carrier seizes to the driveshaft and rips the hull apart... It needs grease at least a couple times a year.
