Oil Everywhere

I have 2 units - 1999 GTI's. Both of them have oil everywhere inside the hull. I think this directs the problem towards me - rather than the units. If it were a mechanical issue, I think there is absolutely no possibility of both of them having the same problem at the same time - out of the blue.

I think I may be overfilling the oil resevoir. From there, I think if I tip the units way back while on the trailer (to run the water out of the inside of them), I may be somehow "pouring" the oil into the hulls. If you look at the oil tank, there is a T fitting on the top of the tank. Off 1 side of the T, there is a breather cap. Off the other side of the T is a thick hose (about 3/8" or 1/2" I.D.) that runs from the tank to down under the engine, under what would be the "port side", way down under the exhaust.

I can't tell if that hose is connected to something. I can't see the end of it and I'm afraid to pull it out too hard. It is rather floppy when I try to move it around, but, it didn't seem like it wanted to come out easily when I pulled on it. THERE IS OIL IN THAT HOSE. If it goes somewhere useful, I'm guessing that oil is there for a reason. If it just runs under the engine and stops, that oil in that hose is certainly the cause of the trouble.

Any ideas?

This hose is not to be confused with the one that comes out of the bottom of the tank, through a filter, and into the engine. That is a separate hose.

I appreciate any feedback you may have.

I have a 1997 gtx 787 and The line on the lower part of the engine under the exhaust is the return line from the crankcase to the oil tank. I also had oil every where and this same line had a hole in it.

the line connects to the rotary valve chamber in the crankcase, there is one on each side in addition to the one that feeds the motor at the front with the filter(3 total). the oil system is sealed and shouldn't leak even if it is overfilled. many times the rubber grommet at the bottom of the tank gets brittle and leaks. clean up all the oil and then look for leaks, they are usually easy to find if you get everything clean. oil tanks can also crack on their parting line and leak. it's odd that both starting leaking at the same time but I doubt it is anything you did wrong.

My 99 GTX RFI has always leaked oil into the bilge. I always put an oil soak pad in the channel area under the fuel tank. I finally pinpointed the source. It leaks from the seam on the oil tank then runs down the fuel tank and everywhere. It is not a bad leak but just enough to make a mess if I dont put a pad down. I try to keep the oil level in the tank below the seam. It doesn't leak bad enough yet to justify replacing the tank. Good Luck.
