What should I look for when buying a "Miami" ski ?lol how can I determine salt damage ? And I seen a couple xp cheap what's the difference between te gsx and xp ? I would obivously get the xp 800 ...an by 1up they mean one rider right ?
I've also seen a couple newer xp like 99 or 98 around 2k are those still prone to blow cranks ?

Sorry for the noob questions ! But this help is greatly appreciated !!!

The city of progress lol

If it doesn't start or if ad says "only needs battery" / "ran before I put away" / "needs carbs cleaned" be careful.
Get it water tested!!!
Go to Markham Park during the week and use boat ramp for canal. Its a great spot to water test w/o making drive to Haulover/Pelican.

If you choose to buy b/c its cheap there are other things to check.
Take plugs out and spin the motor. If it spins thats a good sign. If it dosen't its sized and you need another ~1000 motor.
If you put key on you should here two beeps. That tells you computer is good. If it dosen't beep maybe beeper broken but check gauges to see if warning lights turn on.
If it is able to crank and just not start check compression. Should be at 150. Then you have idea motor healthy.
You need special API certified oil and not TC3. Ask owner to show you what they use.

If your mechanically challenged don't be afraid to work on it. They are easy to work on and you can get help here or from other locals.

Hialeah also known as underwater city :)

Thanks for all the advice fellas there actually selling a 1997 gsx with the 787 for 1600 and it looks real clean just like your old one spimothy Leary ... Both skis sound good now I just need between gsx and the xp I will be riding in the bay in Miami going to sand bars ect and more than likely going out with my boys boat as well so I might just go with the 96 xp or 97+ spx...and yea I've herd the x4 hauls with the 951 are mad fun might get into that next year once I gain a lot of knowledge lol

Another thing since I'm a noob I have no idea what to do or look for when I actually go see a ski for purchase if anyone can give me a few pointers or a link to a helpful thread that would be appreciated ! Thanks again !

Thanks ocod so far what I plan on doing is going to see one that "runs" start it and let it sit for couple mins while I look over the haul ect then do compression check and check plugs ( what should I look for when checking the plugs) and then a minimum of 20 min water test... Ivyhis good enough is there anything else im missing ?!?!?

the only way I'll go see one that " needs battery / ran good last season ect" is if it's dirt cheap...I mean dirt like 100.00-500.00 lol thanks again fellas

Btw ocod what ski do you ride ? Your from South Florida right ??

Thanks for the link spimothy Leary...are you in south Florida as well ??

i forgot, this a miami ski,,, take a real good look at the wiring no tears, or corrosion,.... open the rear electrical box, make sure its dry and no corrosion (the black box) check for two beeps, is the prop all dinged up....does the pump have a bunch of white spots from sitting in salt/barnacles ? does the gas smell good and fresh ?
first thing, b4 u start, is the engine cold or luke warm, (ie : did he start it 10 minutes before you got there)
make sure he shows you the oil he used.
ask him to run thru his post ride maintenance routine, if any.
look for grey fuel lines of course.. and do the carbs look rusty or corroded ? (only takes a couple of minutes to take airbox off)
does the engine wiggle on the engine mounts or is it very tight.
don't wear a hoodie, your too close to sanford & might get shot.
go during the day, not near sunset.
inspect trailer well, tire tread, is tag on trailer current ?
is registration current
is the title in HIS name ? IE is this really his ski and not a flip ski ?
rips/tears in seat reduce value.
ask him specifics of where he rode and how often.
do all gauges work,,, all of them ?
don't be embarrassed to low ball, no matter what he's asking, offer much less and actually bring & show the cash.... cash talks !!!!
i've sold quite a few ski's and let me tell you, guys love to lowball and negiotate but half the time they don't actually have cash, i've told guys "no friggen way am I taking $1500" but if he actually shows me $1500 cash, i'm more inclined to take it.
there's a good chance the seller has had 4 offers, accepted 3 of them, only to find out the buyer doesn't have it with him, can get it, and come back tomorrow, etc, and they NEVER come back.... show the cash...if he say's no, add $100 bill, if he says no.. pick up the cash, put it in your pocket, and continue to discuss (sellers hate to see cash go back in pockets) (don't negiotate over phone, only face to face)
look around the house, garage, is it full of ski parts, stands & tools, or other ski's, (signs that he's flipping ski's) (sometimes a flipper is ok, but i'm very leery of them, i've even had a flipper pretend his name was joseph, (name on title) but the property appraiser website for his address said his name was Steve...
why is he selling it, does he sound believable ?
ask about top speed & fuel range, find out if he's bullshitting., because NO, ski's can't run all day on a tank of gas,,, what octane is he using...
how old is the battery, is it a sealed agm battery or an acid battery (replace it)
nickle and dime the price down with everything you find wrong... nickles add up.
if you can't come up with an agreement, tell him you have others to look at, say you have a nice one in orlando thats a little cheaper and fresh water only. then bump your offer up another $100 and say. "boy i'd rather make a deal right now, cuz if I drive all the way to orlando, i'm probably going to buy that one)
is this a family guy or a late teens, early 20's guy that looks like he rode the ski hard, WOT, all the time.
phew... thats it.

Thanks a lot spimothy Leary !!! Yea I'm one of those guys with no face that isn't affraid to low ball ! So that's a must I've been buying 4 wheelers and flipping for a little over a year so I got my CL hustle pretty sharp lol and yea ocod I had a nice speedster with twin 787but got raped on carb and tune up -_- but this time around I plan on sticking to DIY but thanks for all the help fellas I have a few things to work so I should be looking at some skis next week hopefully !

one group you might want to consider joining is soflariders.net
lots of members in South Florida, and lots of big group rides...
i ride with them now and then but usually the west coast guys only.
good people !

Spim, that rant about what to look for when buying a ski off craigslist should be made a sticky! I am afraid that I've become that "flipper". I've got all seven running and I've got more Seadoos in my near future so I must sell some at some point. Last week I put all the titles in my name($600) and I am honest to a fault so I'm trying, but your sense of the used ski world is on the money.

now your talkin, storage and drinks -- shake and bake, goin to caladisi iland this weekend, with a cooler, and drinks, and jello shots, and a refill cooler in truck, wouldnt have it any other way --:leaving:

I found a 96 xp with no decals and trailer...the guy says its been sitting for a year and the starter went bad...he told me 475 over the phone might be able to fight off a few more bucks in person is this a good deal ??

What would I have to do to a ski that's been sitting that long ? Is it worth the time and money ? How much would I probably have to spend ? He says he has a clean FL title...what should I check if I do go see a ski like this ? Is there any way for a compression test ?

And yes SB. Is a great place to party I'm actually lucky enough to work there on the weekends :) brauds every where !!! Lol

not my first rodeo :) and i've been on the wrong side of a bad seller before, my x4 which I bought in orlando was clean, started right up and had 150/150, bought it out of the back of a pickup truck, had my buddy/mechanic not torn it down it wouldn't have survived 20 minutes on the water, it was a grenade with the pin pulled :( it was literally full of gunk/sand, long story but the bottom line is when buying a used ski, assume the worst, hope for the best and trust nobody !

i'm fortunate that my ride buddy is a retired seadoo mechanic, he lets me take stuff apart, but doesn't let me put it back together (its true !) and i've learned a ton from him, and fortunately we're good friends so i'm not embarrassed to ask him some really really stupid questions.

the best of both worlds, (for mechanics only, not for newb's) is the x4 hull with the 951 inside, it friggen jumps out of the water, hauls azz mid range (arms out of sockets) and has incredible top end....

my buddy has one and its a hell of a ride... !

Oh man I can't imagine how much of a rush that would be. Can't believe they got it to fit! The 8 gal gas tank is probably just a little snack for that motor. ;) that's awesome though.

fiberglass work is involved , i'll have to take a pic when I ride with him next week so you can see how tightly squeezed it is lol, its running 67 right now and he's working on getting it to 70 (death trap !)

I've read up a lot on the 951 x4 conversion. The motor mounts have to be changed and re-fiberglassed in. And if I'm not mistaken some thing has to be re-fiberglassed to get the bigger pump to fit to. If you want to learn more there's a few links over on page 2,3 or 4 of the x4 thread.

There's actually a shop over on lake Norman nc that you bring them a gutted x4 Hull and 5 grand and in 2 weeks they'll have you a running ski. They also do some really sick kawi sxr 951 conversions too.

i bought my 1997 seadoo xp 800 for $1300 and it came with trailer, the only problem it had was that the needle bearing was bad, i have yet to replace it, and ive taken it out to the lake 3 times since purchase, it starts up everytime, runs awesome, and did 61 mph on the gps with me on it, i weigh 200 lbs even, i love the ski, its my favorite model with the shock under the seat, im planning on tearing apart the ski this week to replace the needle bearing... i hear the seadoo xp 800's in the older model without the shock under the seat is a very good ski as well, my uncle has a 97 gsx 951 and its as fast as mine, and he beats the crap out of it every weekend jumping waves for the past couple years, and its still great with regular maintanence... hope i helped any lol
