No Start???

So, I have a 05' 3D with the 787 and I'm having problems,. When I press the start button it does a half second crank and stops. I can keep hitting the start button and it will keep doing a partial crank but will not fully crank and start. It happen to me a few weeks ago on the lake but I got off, back on, re-did the key and it started so I though nothing of it. Now I'm trying to start it in the drive and just keeps doing it.

Think it is a starter solenoid? the DESS system? or MPEM?

Any help is appreciated...
 
If the internals of the engine are ok, meaning it isn't seized up... as you said it did it before...it could be the starter needs some attention. It could be corroded, in the Bendix end of the starter. It sounds like it isn't engaging to the flywheel to turn it over...instead its just bumping it.

You should also add you seadoo model and year to you Avatar for future questions or problems...use mine as an example.

Yeah Karl, engine is fine. That sounds like an idea, it is like taking the starter lead and just touching it to a battery for a second. It goes to crank and then stops. And I'll get to the avatar as soon as I can. Thanks.. -Mike
 
Check to see that its pulling current. You can do this a few ways. Check the voltage on the cable from the solenoid to the starter. You'll see the voltage drop to about 10V when the starter is drawing a lot of current. You could probably also hear it straining.

If its not pulling current or straining, then I would check the solenoid. Try jumping the solenoid with pliers. If the solenoid is working, try taking your car battery and jumping it in parallel with your pwc battery. Make sure not to disconnect your battery from within the pwc.

I know on my much older 96 XP, after straining the starter for about 1 second, the MPEM (I assume) cuts off the power to the solenoid, most likely so you don't overheat the motor, solenoid or wires.

If you get desperate you can check the signal going to the solenoid. I stick a 30AWG wire down the connectors and then re-connect them. Make sure to protect the wire and connect to a DVM. This is a the starter signal going to the relay/solenoid.

I would pull the plugs as timmyboy76 suggested as its very easy to do and will tell you a lot. Even if you are sure, do it again, it takes 30 seconds.
