been chasing issues that carried over from last season when I got stranded on the lake Labor Day weekend last year. Replaced both rectifiers in April due to battery not charging causing me to get towed last year. After that, port engine fired off with out to many hassles, the starboard engine was a different story. After charging the battery and it showing 13.4v, it wouldn't turn over on a regular basis, then wouldn't turn over at all.
I had two beeps from the dess so I jumped the solenoid and she kicked over so I ordered a new one and installed it. The engine turned over twice and then nothing, the battery showed 13+ volts so I jumped the solenoid and she kicked over so I ordered another solenoid just to be safe. I double checked that my terminals were clean and tight and thought I got this solved. After installing the NEW solenoid it turned over twice and then stopped, no clicks no nothing. I checked the battery and it showed 13+v but found out it was dropping to around 9.4v during starting. I bought a new battery, installed it and she turned right over..
The no start/no fire issue started right after that. The engine turned over great but it didn't seem to be getting any spark, after doubling checking everything I noticed that the ground to the bottom of the CDI didn't seem to be tight. After chasing wires I realized I was losing ground to the coil. After trying to tighten the ground screw I realized I was fighting a losing battle so I grabbed some wire, a bolt, washer, nut and a couple of ring terminals and made up a temporary new ground to prove my theory.. After getting everything wired up she fired right off, actually faster and better than she ever has. Now all I have to do is find a new/used electrical box or find a more permanent solution to run my ground for the CDI.
