I have a 2004 GTI LE that I recently bought and used twice with no issues. The third time the lanyard stopped making a beep when attached and there was no power to the start button. I hear a light tick back at the solenoid when the key is almost on the switch but no power to the start button. Never worked on PWC before but a very quick learner. Checked some fuses but nothing near the MPEM. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Not a dumb question at all, thanks for asking. Since reading a lot of the posts I have gone through and checked the battery, fuse back at the solenoid, continuity and ohms on lots of wires, grounds throughout but nothing wrong. I then checked the 5A fuse on the MPEM to find it blown. I replaced it and as soon as my lanyard got close to switch it blew the fuse. I removed the negative battery cable put another fuse in, reconnected the battery and tried again (blew as soon as I touched the switch with the lanyard). I guess the next check would be the diode that some of the other posts spoke of.

Unplug the connector at front of engine at mag housing. Replace fuse, does it blow when battery connected? Now plug back in the Mag connector. Blows fuse? Use VOM on Omh scale to see if charging Stator is shorted to ground. Black lead to engine ground, red to yellow pins one at a time in plug. Look for short to ground. Service manuals are available on the Internet for down load. Let us know what you find. Just fixed this problem.

I unplugged the connector hooked the battery back up and put the key on, no blown fuse:) plugged the connector back in and hook the key back up and yes u guessed it, blew fuse. Does that mean it's the magneto?

Test with meter. Make sure it is shorted to ground. which means it may be bad or wire came loose. Mine would pop fuse as soon as battery was connected. Unplug the stuff leading to gauges and gas gauge try again. Then unplug rectifier and try. Get more fuses. Could take a few. Check, clean and protect all ground wires with dielectric tune up grease. Check wire harness from MPEM to stator for bare wires or rubs. It seems to be something powered my MPEM after key brings systems alive. Some times it's the MPEM. You want to make sure before you buy one. You don't want to blow a new one. Because of the problem that blew the first one.
