I recently inherited a 1998 Seadoo GTX limited. I don't believe it has been used or serviced in 3 years. After putting in a new battery it started but is idle is rough and with die repeatedly. I wanted to start first with the basics like spark plugs. What else should I do first? Fuel filter, air filter. Looking for a step by step guide.

Thanks

If you have Grey Tempo fuel lines, nothing else matters just yet. They are engine killers as they force a Lean condition and the pistons will eat themselves. You need to replace the lines, pull and clean the carbs and internal filters as well as the fuel selector.

After that, you will want to change the carbs and what not.

I don't recall the last year that the Grey Tempo lines were used, but I think you ski had them.

yes, a 98 would have grey lines.

you'll need approx 16' of 5/16" and 5' of 1/4

APPROX, don't quote me, you can't cut the lines SHORTER so I usually buy 20' (a roll) and maybe 5 or 10 of the 1/4

u can always use fuel line for something :)

in 98 they made both the limited 951 carb and a 787 rfi. first do a compression check then replace those dirty rotten grey fuel hoses, replace fuel selector and clean the carbs including the carb filters. that is if it still has the grey tempo fuel hoses.

1998 GTX LTD - is carbed, and has Grey fuel lines. It's what I have and I am working on mine as time allows me..

Look at the gasket on the water separator / fuel filter at the front under front hatch. The gasket goes bad and it sucks air. You can get service manual off the Internet. It gives you procedures. It does have oil in the tank? You put fresh gas in it? May need Carb rebuilt or at least the little filter pulled and cleaned. Don't fly blind, ask questions. Take pictures, draw diagrams. Somethings can kill the engine quick if you do not do it right or know about it. It needs oil filter changed and bled for example. Make sure the oil pump cable is set to specs. They may have never been done. Add an inline fuel filter before carb. Must of the work can be done cheap. But if you want a good running toy it takes a little work to get it right. A lot of former owners really did not know or care to learn how to care for the toys. Ask questions, there are no Dumb questions here. No one will make fun of you.

Read the posts on procedures on the forum. Like replacing fuel lines. One at a times, 100% stainless steel screw clamps for the hoses. A couple of wraps of electrical tape under clamps to protect hoses. Read how to get old clamps off. You snap a nipple off, it could get expensive to replace a part or really had to find a replacement part.

Thanks. I found the guides and will be reading them. At this point I have the winter in Texas to do some work

Thanks. Bman98gtx keep me posted on your progress it would be nice to have a guide or step by step. I looked inside and in believe mine has the grey tempo lines. I found a guide to replace them online http://www.how2dothat.com/How-To-Change-The-Fuel-Lines-On-A-Sea-Doo.html

Should I purchase a new fuel selector while I'm at it?

Do the fuel lines one at time and you will be fine. Take one off, measure and cut the new line and install right back on.
