Hi everyone,

I just got a 2004 Sea Doo GTI. My dad has 4 speakers of Alpine SPS 600 that he didn't install in his boat and a Pyle 800w mp3 adapters included. Before he installed it in his boat, he found a good deal for a JL system and brought it. So he never returned the speakers and amp.

I don't understand stereos at all. Is the amp enough for the 4 speakers? And, since it can be directly connected to an mp3/iphone, is a receiver recommend anyways for better sound? I am really hesitant on just having my Iphone in the small center compartment in front of the seat. I just know that one of these days the phone is going to drop in the water. That is why I would rather have it isolated in the front storage area in a otterbox and have a receiver installed in the center compartment where I can control the Iphone.

If anyone has any advice on this, please let me know.

Thank you

I have been wanting to put a true stereo on my ski for awhile. I have doughts about doing it too. I have found several threads where guy's have put in small stereo's, but not a full size one like you are thinking about. Only things that would worry me is the moisture, however, you can google it and find where other's have put in a complete system that is sealed under the front storge. The other things would be the temp and bouncing around, it get's very warm from the engine and sun in that front compartment. If you do get it installed post pic's and let us know how it turns out!! Good luck Socalx09

Not too bad actually. I know pyle is the cheap setup, but I wasn't about to pay more for some speakers than I paid for the ski.

I will find out more this summer when I get to play with it. I have a small cheap MP3 player that's also a fm radio.

I see your running a pyle hydra amp. What size is it? Your setup looks cool. I am going get a shockproof/waterproof mp3 locker from grainger or otterbox mounted in my center console just to be safe and so its not bouncing around.

I went to my audio shop that does my car and the guy helped me out a lot. He is going to have to see my sea doo first to see where exactly he can drill 4 holes for the 6.5 speakers. Turns out it is better to not have a receiver and run my iphone directly through the amp. The amp will be installed in front storage compartment. He recommend that when I beach it, that I open it up to let it breath, but wasn't worried about it overheating. Also, I am adding a second battery since he was concerned that the system might drain out the battery when I am beaching it and listening to my stereo without the engine turned on. I thought a onboard battery charger would be added to the second battery. My initial thoughts was that I charged the onboard charger overnight so it held the charge, and throughout my day on water, the onboard charger charged the battery. Turns out, the onboard charger only makes it easier to charge the battery. It charges the battery overnight so it has a full charge. Unless I go to a dock and plug it in every so hours, my 2nd battery will probably drain. My family and I are usually on the water from 7am-5pm.

So right now I am either looking at a StayNcharge charger that will charge both batteries while on the water when the engine is on automatically. Or, getting a battery switch and having the engine charge the batteries.

Price is going be around the low 200s for the install, and also will repair any fiberglass cracks if anything goes wrong while drilling without the price increasing.

Probably will take it next wednesday since my Amp is still in the mail.

I would be weary about using any "onboard charger". How does that work when your on the water. With all this electrical I would be nervous about roasting an mpem.

$200 is a good deal, it's a lot of work.

However running 4 6.5" speakers, and trying to charge dual batteries from your stock engine... not a good idea.

Is your engine carb or RFI or DI?

The charging system in all 2 stroke sea-doos is very basic, and can not handle much load... even the bilge pump has a 3 amp fuse. 3 amps. Not 10, not 15, not 20. 3....

If you fry your charging system... your gonna have a bad time.

For a larger system I'd see about incorporating a 2nd battery that's ONLY hooked to the stereo.

No risk of a dead battery for starting the ski, and just charge it over night.

my amp is approx 4" by 4" by 1" deep.

$55 for a case? I just found a el cheapo mp3 player. Load it up with some good tunes.

I set mine up so i can volume up/down and on/off switch left handed. that way I don't have to take my right hand off the throttle/steering.

That's a great idea sabr, you have no risk really hurting your ski and it should have no problem. I would use a deep cycle big marine battery used in boats and find some place to mount it

I was planning on using one of these products. I was going to get the all charge for $188.99, but now might just get the tow n charge since I am worried about overworking my engine. Had anyone used any of their products?

If this product still sounds like a bad idea, I will probably just have my 2nd battery only hook it up to the radio and have it charge overnight.

Yeah, I am going take my iPhone with me for pandora. I have a bad history of dropping my phone, so that case will save me many times.

Deep cycle battery is a good idea, but I have to figure out where to put that. Those are big and heavy. Might have to get a good pwc battery, and when it runs out, it runs out and no more stereo.

Hm this is starting to sound like a bad idea putting a stereo system like that in.

Thanks for all of your help.

its possible; just keep in mind your not dealing with a 120+ amp car alternator here.

4 speakers might be a bit excessive; the GTI simply isn't that big. I really only found 1 spot on my GSX because I wanted to be able to hear it as well, as I drove.

a deep cycle battery is what you want. something that can be charged and fully discharged day after day.

a normal battery is a starting battery. Run it flat (dead) too many times and it will be shot.

So a deep cycle battery just for the stereo correct?

Yeah, my audio guy said he has to see the sea doo first to see what he can do. I just had 4 speakers and thought, wouldn't that be sweet to have all 4 on my sea doo. I know he said he can do custom fiberglass pods if he can't find a place for all 4. But that would just get $$$ fast, and I will end up just having two installed. I will do the install next week and probably have my dad install the deep cycle battery when it gets closer to May and have it run off the deep cycle. Gives me time to save up for that battery.

Thanks for ur advice Sabr

Went to my local battery store and asked for a deep cycle battery and the guy showed me this battery. I didn't see the words deep cycle on it, but asked and he said they were deep cycle. He said the smallest boat deep cycle battery probably wouldn't fit and that this one would probably give me 4-6 hours of stereo time a day and not weigh as much.

I just wanted to double check on here that this was a deep cycle battery and it would work before I brought it.

Well I might have found a solution to powering my stereo. Repurposed LiPo batteries 3 cell car packs. I found a person that powers their stereo with amp and speakers in their sea doo with this and says it lasts for several hours and days sometimes. If this is true, they are so small, and light that it would just make better sense than trying to fit another battery in there. I am going to go my local hobby shop and see if this is a good, safe option. Anyone ever heard of this?

Came back from hobby shop and learned a lesson. That I wasn't realizing there was a "m" infront of the AH. I got excited and then came back to the realization that lipo batteries will get very expensive.

Back to 2nd battery connected to stereo only and recharge every night. I read up on small solar panel charging, but that would take days I believe.

IF I have an Automatic charging relay that only charges the 2nd battery when the first battery is full, and not charging two batteries at the same time, would that still put too much load on the alternator?

Sorry I keep throwing out ideas. Just trying to see all possibilities before wednesday happens. I think that is the last suggestion I got that might work, but if it puts my alternator at risk, I will just charge it nightly when I use it.

Thanks for helping me out!

If you aren't opposed to mail order Lipo hobby batteries can be had for reasonable price.
Check Hobby King's website, be sure to select USA wharehouse, International shipping can be steep...
Turnigy 5000mAH (5amp hour) 3s 20c paks can be had for $26.31 + shipping.

The caveat is to be very careful with lipos overcharging/mishandling can produce nasty fire!

lol, yep, I think that's what I said

miliamp Hour = 1,000th of an Amp.... you're gonna have a bad time. (I hope you are getting the south park reference).

It's actually a magneto and Stator. Your ski does not have an alternator.

I wouldn't bother. I'd just charge at night. You should get several hours out of almost any lead acid battery.

That speaker system and amp was designed for a full boat engine with a real alternator.

I'm getting the FSM for your ski now to look up just how much power the magneto puts out... because it won't be much. and if you fry it... your looking at a lot of work to that engine. It's not like replacing a car alternator.

Well I just dropped off my sea doo at the stereo shop. The owner was convinced that adding a isolator or an automatic charging relay would work. I explained him that I was told it would fry or overload the stator and magneto. But he was convinced it would be fine since it would only charge the second battery if the first battery was full and wouldn't charge both at the same time. AND, it would be an extra $250 for the install and many people have had a second battery on a 2 stroke and been just fine..
Rather than argue with someone who thinks they are right and won't pay the bill when I fry my jet ski, I just said I will bring him the battery I brought later and have him install it later on and to just have it connected to the main battery for now. But, really I will just have my dad install the second battery and not have it connecting anything. And charge every night. And it isn't going to cost my dad $250 to put a battery in.
