New to me 2006 GTX 155

Hi all, I am a new member here and I have just purchased a 2006 GTX 155. I am looking forward to riding and it is a substantial upgrade from my old, very 90's bright-1994 Yamaha Waverunner III.

Can you please tell me of any problems or good things about the GTX. It is the standard/non supercharged model.

I think you'll like it, some years were prone to corroded/broken valve stems (a dropped valve head bouncing around in the cylinder = big trouble). Check for year, and the stem has a number stamped at the keeper for positive confirmation, I forget the good vs bad #

Thanks Sportster, I will keep this in mind. I bought the ski off of my cousin and I think it has under 100 hrs on it. They didn't use it much. I don't know because I can't pick it up until early May, and they weren't sure. (it is in storage at a marina in Chautauqua Lake, New York) Anyway, thanks for the reply!

Congratulations and Welcome, I think you will be happy with the ski. The 155hp motor is nearly bulletproof if properly maintained, oil changes, coolant, spark plugs, etc. Definitely less frustrating than the old 2-strokes could be.

Once you get it, probably a good idea to give it a thorough once over. Check it out make sure there are no issues before you hit the water. Nobody likes surprises out there. I would probably inspect the jet pump well and make sure it does not need maintenance.

Sounds like you have some time before it is in your hands, not a bad idea to download the shop manual for your ski and familiarize yourself with it, especially if you plan to be doing the maintenance and fixes yourself. Thanks for the tips devonte007. I have been doing all the research I can. I will take your advice and download the manuals.

I also need a new cover. Does anyone have any tips or preference on aftermarket covers?

The 4-tec 155 engine is very well proven. You can get thousands of hours from a maintained engine.

The valves, as mentioned above, are and or can be a HUGE issue. The early style were hollow and failed. When they did, it got expensive very fast. For some reason, I think the 06 may have had the hollow valves. I will do a bit of digging and see if I can provide you with better info.

Ok,, here is what I found,,,

The exhaust valves on the 04-06 RXP/RXT engines have hollow, sodium filled stems just below the head of the valve. The problem is that the material they used for these valves is very brittle, and subject to a problem called corrosion microcracking.

In late 2006, they switched to solid stem valves made from a tougher, more corrosion resistant alloy.

There are numbers stamped on the valves, 72xx is the older valve and 75xx is the newer (good) valve.

Thanks Joe, I'm hoping mine has the later valves, I know my cousin bought it new in Sept. 2006 so I'm hoping it was a later production model.

I bought my GTX and RXT-X new in 2011. One is an 09 and one is a 2010... Just making a point is all. It is worth looking at them. It is a pretty expensive repair.

Yes, it's better to pull the valve cover and check the number stamped on the valve stem, shouldn't be too difficult and potentially save yourself from a ruined short block if the bad valves are in it by removing the head and replacing valves before something happens.

Several posters have done this and based on their photos were very glad they did b/c the stems weren't looking good where they're welded to the valve head.

Ski looks great! nice galvanized trailer too. I won't buy a mild steel trailer anymore, galvanized is the way to go.

Thanks, the Galv trailer is a plus. I will check the valves. She cleaned up great. Now if only the weather would cooperate.
