No the motor defiantly shouldn't have to come out. Usually the starter is tucked up in the most awful spot to get to it. First I would start by taking a light and a mirror and finding the starter and it's attachment points. Then if you hold your tongue in the right spot and give it a few shots you can usually get a grab on the bolts and pull them out. When I took it of my '95 GTX it was a pain, but putting it back in was pretty simple after I took it out.
