Hello everyone, started looking through some of the topics here and decided I would like to join. It appears that there is a wealth of knowledge here so hopefully some of you guys can help me with some issues I'm currently having.

First off I bought my boat 5 days ago as a restoration/project. I think I got a pretty good deal at $800. The hull is perfect, it doesn't even look like the boat was ever in water. The owner told me that the boat has been sitting for 3 years and that the previous owner had passed away.

Here is what I have going on.

All accessories fired right up after brand new battery.
Key on post- no beeps, no gauges, no nothing. Engines do not turn over. Basically it seems that the DESS and MPEM are not functioning.

This seems like a very very common problems with seadoo in general from what i've been reading.

I have gone over all grounds, fuses, connections, tried new DESS post. Seems like MPEM is dead.

I took the boat to the dealer (currently there now) He connected diagnostic tool and it did not/could not establish a connection. They are going to do a few more things to ensure that the problem lies with the MPEM. However it is my understanding that this MPEM is discontinued.

<<CLIFFS>>

Bought boat
installed new battery
NO MPEM or DESS activity
Checked all connections, grounds, fuses, etc.
Possibly need replacement but possibly discontinued
NEED advice if MPEM is discontinued.

Thanks for any help!!!!!!

Yep... sounds like the MPEM is dead. Seadoo computers are very sensitive to over voltage... and if someone tried to start it while hooked to a charger, or jumped it from a running vehicle... the MPEM is gone. It may be able to be fixed... but I don't think too much is known about the 1800 computer. If you want to send it to me... I would love to dissect it, and see what can be done. (I will share what I learn with everyone here)

Since you got a GREAT deal on the boat... your best bet is to wire in a pair of ski 800cc MPEM's. There are a few aftermarket units that can be adapted. It's not a simple thing to do, and you will loose the neutral safety switch... but you can get up and running again.

Don't give up on the quest for an MPEM. I got a brand new one from the ozarks somewhere. They run about 1600$

You could also try a google search using Seadoo & the part #. Somebody may be "parting out" a boat like yours and you may get lucky.

Yeah I have tried the google thing. Does anyone know the user "seadooya"? He has a sportster 1800 that it looked like he was going to start parting out but he hasn't logged on in over a month. I sent him a pm but haven't heard anything yet. Keeping my fingers crossed.

yep ebay, craigslist, google, everywhere I could think of. The dealer is supposed to call me tomorrow to tell me if they can still get the mpem from seadoo. I'm sure it will be upwards of $1400 though. But if thats what it takes to get it going then I'm all for it.

member "seadooya" has a 1998 that it looked like he was going to part out but he hasn't been active in over a month. It would be great if anyone knows him and can get a message to him. I pm'd him but no response.

Yeah after doing some research I think I'm going to attempt to repair it myself. I have done diode repair in the past. If that's all it is it should be simple. I'm going to take the mpem apart tomorrow. I will post up progress if any. Thanks for all of the help.

I went thru the same thing looking for one. I got lucky I guess, found mine new on eBay. We tore the old one apart to check it out. You could clearly see the smoked wire inside of if, but we damaged the board in the process of removing the potting, which is quite difficult.

what symptoms did you have when your mpem died? I just have nothing. The fuse isn't blown or anything but the thing just doesn't work.

Almost the same as yours. I could only start one engine. Other was nothing. Dealer couldn't read hours either on it. Didn't have a single blown fuse anywhere.

well gives me a little hope that I might find a burnt diode in the mpem tomorrow. I have some experience with that potting material and replacing diodes and I have a friend that repairs chips. So maybe this isn't near as bad as i've been thinking.

Would be nice to be able to fix it on your own. You could definately make extra money by repairing them for people.

bad news. the mpem was burned beyond repair. Looks like a prolonged exposure to high voltage. Good news is, it was definitely the MPEM that was causing the no start. Oh well going to keep my eyes peeled for a good used unit.

Dude that sucks!!!.... I spent a few hours looking for one for you with no luck.. Worse comes to worse, you can always part it out and recoup your money. I'll keep looking and maybe other peeps will also. Strangely enough, I looked for one for mine with the same results!!
Cmon guys, let's find him a MPEM.
