New MPEM

I have a OEM MPEM for my 98 GTI but my mechanic is having trouble programming DESS. He has the program and hardware to do it but it is giving him fits. Any tricks of the trade out there i can pass along to him?

Is he using BUDS software or hand held programmer? Is he using the connector or going through the DESS post? Does he have the right protocol setting? Need more info to help but is pretty simple to program a new MPEM.

they are using a SBT program on a laptop and thru the DESS post.

Sorry, can't help with that but have heard that SeaScan, ScanDoo, and the SBT program have some shortcomings. I only use BUDS.
