So my dad just picked up this gts for $300. the old guy said it was a 1988 but after a little research i found they started at 1992??? does anyone know what year this is? It needs a new motor and we're wondering where we can find good motors online besides ebay and if a bigger motor can fit in it. Im pretty sure it has a 580 in it but im not sure. i think the motor says 580,7. can a 700 series motor fit? thanks. btw theres a little crack on the front haha

Look for your hull identification number (much like a VIN number). The last two digits should be numbers and represents the year it was made.

I don't have any personal experience with that, but it has been done.

It is not as easy as just bolting in a new motor either. For starters, usually you have to take the electronic systems for the larger engine as well (MPEM/CDI).

You will have to wait until some of the forum experts chime in and let you know exactly what you would have to do. You may not get an answer for a day or two, but eventually you will get some more advice.

As far as motors go, some of the biggest sellers of rebuilt engines that you can check out online are SBT and Full Bore.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that these companies require a core trade (you send them your old engine).

mounted another mirror and finished motor swap. ran perfectly fine until it died because it was FULL of water and the battery was dead. we kept it on the trailer and saw there was a bad leak under ther the cover of the shaft. took cover off and was leaking between the boot and metal ring thing. have any input on how to seal the problem?

The carbon seal will leak a little. That's how it stays cool. But, if you push the stainless ring (what you are calling the cap) toward the transom, you may find a second clip groove in the driveshaft. If there is, put your clip there. The extra pressure will keep the leaking to a minimum.

Also, you may want to check the condition of the carbon ring. (it could have a crack in it)
