New guy - did I mess up my first premix?

Hello everyone,

First post. I just purchased a 2002’GTI (717 engine) last week. Previous owner converted to premix and has been running Quicksilver semi syn oil for the mix.

I grabbed two quarts of Penzzoil 2 stroke oil not knowing any better (I believe this is TCW3 oil) and used that for a partial tank fill. I pumped about 8.75gal of fuel and used 28oz of oil for a 40:1 mix.

There was still a bit of old fuel with the Quicksilver oil left.

Three questions:
Can these two oils mix?
Am I risking anything running this tank and correcting myself moving forward?
Is it best to drain the tank and start over?

Thanks for any advice.

Thank you. No issues in mixing the two different oil types?
Technically speaking...you aren't mixing the oil types per se (some mixing of course in the fuel tank but should be relatively inconsequential in reality).......the forum wisdom will indicate DON'T mix oil types if you are using the stock oil system to feed both the engine (bottom) and the carbs. Since you are pre-mixing fuel and oil, you are BURNING the oil in the fuel tank (not mixing the oil in the oil tank for the lower engine/crankshaft bath, that's a no-no).

BTW....there is no technically good reason to remove the stock oil pump system to convert to a pre-mix situation.....just burns more oil in the long run (as most conventional forum wisdom states that I've ever read).

Ah ok, that makes sense! There was still probably 3 gal of the Quicksilver premix in the tank. So maybe I’ll top off with new gas/Quicksilver to dilute the mix and just run this tank out.

Does anyone have any additional input on this? Hoping to ride this weekend if the weather is good - just want to be sure running this tank isn’t a bad idea.

Roughly 2-3 gal of the correct oil/fuel
8.75 gal and 28oz TCW3 premix
Ski is premix

Yes, 40:1 is fine unless you are offshore racing at WOT for hours at a time then 32:1.

Well, I ended up draining approx 10 gal out. Chalked it up as a lesson learned and cheap insurance.

I did the mix 40:1. It definitely doesn’t get ridden WOT the whole time for extended periods.

As a matter of fact, I had to fix something during the ride and despite the ski running and being at full temp, the engine wasn’t too hot to touch (touching the top of the motor/front of casing). I was pretty shocked.
