Hey y'all. New member here. I'm no stranger to forums but I figured I'd start a thread and say hi first of all. I got a 2004 GTI from doing barter work. Needs an engine so I'm doing research.
I zipped the jet drive off today to bring it into work and clean it up. I'm a mechanic so this stuff doesn't phase me at all. This was a recovery ski also so it probably needs more than the engine. It's been sitting in the woods for a couple years. But it cleaned up really well. A buddy of mine back in 06 or so had an 05 RXP 255 that I rode a couple times so I'm somewhat familiar w these. I'm not looking to win races. As long as I get a fun toy to tool around with.

Anyway. The aluminum on the jet drive is all corroded. What can I spray this with before reinstall? Can I just clean up the exterior surfaces and hit it with some rattle can? I'm new to marine stuff so I'm not sure if it's that simple. I pretty much live on the ocean and I'll be taking this on saltwater.

I'll be getting a rebuild kit, seals and wear sleeve for the whole assembly while its out.

Thanks in advance.

Impeller looks good. I would pull the end cone off and check the oil. If it isn't milky the bearings and seals are probably good. Refill with the proper oil.

I would replace the wear ring and the rubber pump surround gasket that is rotten in your picture.

Right on! Thanks!

I take it if I spin it by hand it will only free spin about 1/4 turn and stop is normal right? Typical bearing preload. It doesn't feel notchy. The seal to the hull mounting point is pretty cracked, should replace that as well right?

I run Klotz jet pump oil but many here use the Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil.

Yes, replace that pump seal. If the pump sucks air from anywhere it will feel like the clutch slipping on a car.

Gotcha. I think I have some extra hanging around from previous projects. It doesn't take much. I didn't get a lot out. Put some in the nose cone or just kinda top off the shaft housing and call it good?

I got the wear ring out too. Thing was tore up.

There is a plug on the side of the cone. It should be just off center when the pump is sitting correctly. Just slowly fill it to the bottom of the threads.
