Hi guys im newbie to the boards and to pwc, so please forgive me if i dont seem to be up do date with how things work haha.

Anyways, im looking into purchasing a pair of 2002 xp's for my first set of pwc's. Ive looked at them entirely inside and out and they seem to be in very pristine condition. They fired up without hesitation and everything ran smoothly. Now i know pwc's do require some preventative maintenance. So before i jump into this purchase is there anything you guys can recommend for me to look at before i decide to pull the trigger? And if these crafts have any history of malfunctions or issues i should look at? Thanks guys and i look forward to posting frequently on here!

Look for grey fuel lines (stock tempo lines). If it has them they are known to "goo" up inside. You will need to replace them and clean your carbs. Also look at the impeller and do a compression test. Most importantly, ride them on the water. Lots of problems don't show up when running off the hose

check fuel lines.
check wear ring and impeller( look under neeth the ski and up the intake grate)
Check engine compression( should be between 130-150psi and not a diffrenace of 10% between the 2 jugs)
and take them for a lake test. they can run great on the trailer and not even start in the water.

Not to put a damper on your purchase. But what are your riding habits? I'm not sure this is your best choice for your first ski's.

As you notice both Scott and myself have 2 different kinds of ski's. The XP's are a lot of fun very quick and great for jumping wake but will tire you out in a short time, the first time I rode the XP I thought it was trying to kill me, but I love it now. The GTI is more a cruiser, and you can ride it all day, it's kinda like comparing a Corvette to a Buick. More often than not my day at the lake will consist of riding the XP for a couple of hours, and finishing up on the GTI.

The above advise is very sound about checking the general condition of a ski, all I am saying is to be sure what type of ski you want, and you might consider what a lot of us have done and buy two different type ski's.

Yea I have been looking more for a performance/sport pwc and I feel that the xp's will help fufill that purpose.

And thanks everyone for the input, vert much appreciated and will look for all These things when I go to negotiate the price. Now trying to convince a private seller to let me test run em on a lake might be difficult...

the simi-parab. hulls are smoother than the x4's. but lake test them and see if you like them. i had the choice of a 2001 xp and what became "my" 96 xp. the 2001(same hull type as what your looking at.) is a good all around ski. the reason i got the 96 was because i had a cruser. i wanted something to spin and have fun on. and the 96 did that Well. the 98-04 xp are good all around ski's

any serious sell will let you. if you have the money in hand and show them that, they should not have a problem with it. if they do have a problem, they may be trying to hide something. its like buying a car without test driving it.

That's true. I will be going back there over the weekend to inspect the remaining things and hope all goes well! Thanks everyone!
