New 1996 Sea-Doo GSX Owner – Looking to Learn and Maintain Properly

Hey everyone,

I’m new to the PWC world and recently picked up a 1996 Sea-Doo GSX. The previous owner took exceptional care of this ski, and I want to make sure I maintain that same level of diligence moving forward to protect its longevity.

I’m looking to better understand the systems on this machine—everything from the 787 Rotax engine, fuel system, and electrical components, to general upkeep like winterization, wear ring inspection, and proper flushing procedures. I’ve done some research, but I know firsthand experience is invaluable, so I’d love to hear any maintenance routines, common issues to watch out for, basic inspections, or tips you’ve picked up over the years.

Appreciate any guidance. Looking forward to learning from you all and keeping this classic running strong.

Thanks!

Download the maintenance manual and the parts manual, read through them. It will help you understand the tasks at hand. Both are free online.

Just my opinion buy OEM parts when possible, after market for most stuff is junk/unreliable.

When flushing the ski: run the motor , start the water hose, turn off the water hose, wait to drain and turn off motor. If not you can flood the engine if water is on and motor is off. Don't run the ski on land for too long (<1 min), there are driveline parts that are not getting cooled, flushing usually takes 10 to 15 secs. Is you are in salty area wash everything down.

Get the right 2 stroke oil: API-TC ,not TW3. Also try not to mix brands, the oils can react to each other.

Good luck and have fun.
