From all the reading Ive done (my head is spinning) , I know its got to be around the fuses somewhere. Ive attached a pic below of my mpem...anyone know where this little bugger is?100_2718.JPG100_2717.JPG

That looks pretty close. That's the pic I remember seeing.

See what I mean about the guy digging down to it.

Thanks. Ive seen this pic as well (I think Ive found every mpem but mine!...LOL) but its not the same mpem as mine, But again the diode seems to be fairly close to the fuses , so Im starting around the fuses and going outward... I will post a pic for anyone that might run into this in the future once I find out where it is.....

As promised , I got to the 278000930 / 278-001-496 (2000 gti) mpem tonight. Took a few pics so hopefully if someone has this issue in the future it will be easy to locate the diode (I used a measuring tape for ease of reference). It is pretty easy to separate the sealing compound from the case with alittle heat from a heat gun and a 90 degree pick that I was using to clear away the compound. When separating the two you've got to squeeze the tabs on both areas where the harnesses connect while pulling the cover off.

100_2741.JPGSuccess! $6 for the diode and $6 for the black silicon ...total cost to fix $12! Total time around 3 hours... if theres another time with the same type of mpem it should take no longer then 1 hour to repair.... heres a pic of the final fix

Very good,,,,

Glad you got it worked out and provided good information to others...

I don't remember the number but I know someone posted it on one of these threads... radio shack didn't have one but ebay did.... I think is w as $6 shipped

I have a 2004 gti LE and I followed your directions and pictures. Now I have the diode exposed but is there 2 or just 1. I see the tail of possibly another but didn't want to dig it out if it was something different. Did you test the continuity first? When I test it the continuity is open.

I didn't do a continuity test as I asked the previous owner if he jump started or put a trickle charge on the battery when it was in the ski. He said yes. And when I took the computer out and bench tested it, it was dead so it had to be the diode. I believe there is only one...
Did u check my previous posts for the diode number?
