Need more RPM's

I have a 1996 Challenger with the 787 motor. The last couple times I've taken it out the engine seemed to bog at high RPM's, and would max out at about 6100. I read up on the forum and decided to clean the rave valves, as they had not been cleaned since I bought it 5 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised to see that although the valves hadn't been cleaned for some time, the valve weren't really very dirty. But I got them cleaned up and rebuilt them with new parts. Took the boat out on the lake today and noticed immediately that the engine was running much better particularly at higher rpm. But the engine is still only turning 6600 rpm's. I think that I may have an issue with the pump, as it seems to be cavitating. But I believe I should be able to turn more rpm's at full throttle. Any recommendations as to where I might look next. I have not had the carb's rebuilt.

It could be the throttle cables need to be adjusted so you are getting full open throttle position. Remove the carb air box ans look at the linkage to see if it can be adjusted so the throttle valve/ butterfly is opening fully. If the cable has stretched as they do it might need to be adjusted. Also check the oil injector cable too to be sure it is in sync with the carb cable also.

Thank you for the recommendation, I will check the throttle link to see if I can get it to open more. Likewise I'll look in my manual to see how to check and adjust the oil injector cable. Just curious, what rpm range would a properly functioning 787 turn?

Just wanted to give some feedback on the suggestion to check the throttle cables on my Challenger. I was finally able to get back to where my boat is and do the check. When I push the throttle lever full forward the throttle valve/butterflies are both opened fully. Would you have any other suggestions?

6600rpm aint bad, but dont think its a pump issue, if so, you'd see the extra 300rpm. If anything, has the carbs been gone thru, in last 5yrs?

No haven't had the carb's gone through. That is one of the things I'm looking at, but just wanted to get some input from folks who have a lot more experience that me with this sort of thing.
