My 97 GTI runs awesome, but for no reason will just die at high speed.
Pull the key off, put it back on, starts right up & runs great. Will happen
once or twice a day or ten times a day. Could it be the key or post?
Have had it serviced, no fuel problems. Any advice is very helpful to me.

put in a fresh set of plugs, and when it happens, check the plugs. It could be running out of fuel. (that's bad) Do you still have gray fuel lines.

If it's not fuel.... then it's probably your lanyard or post. Try cleaning the contacts... and if it still happens, replace the post. The little magnetic switch inside is known to die, and cause the problem you are describing.

After it dies, I pull the key off & put it back on & it starts right up. But you
have to pull the key on & off for it to start.

I agree
Unplug the connector for the lanyard post and clean it, then clean the inside of the lanyard itself. Then try it again. You can also clean, dielectric grease and test all fuses, wire connectors, and grounds, unplug the magneto connector plug and clean it too. Hopefully you just have a corroded terminal somewhere that is breaking contact. If not.
Besides grounds, fuses and fuse holders, the main places to be concerned with are the innards of your coil box, and all igniton related connectors, including the stop start switch and lanyard post, mpem, cdi and coil connector.
Worst case senario is a bad ignition pickup in the magneto housing that may be broken or is covered with metal debris and is getting shorted out. Bills86e
