I have a 1998 sporster 1800. I got a rope caught around the shaft of one of my engines. Rope did not get into impeller but did do some damage to a blue sleeve that covers the shaft. Does anyone know if the boat is operational with damage to the blue plastic sleeve.I do have some pictures but will need my kid to help me send them. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Pics of sleeve I hope?

P1030287.jpg Thanks for all the quick replies. Encouraging and better news than expected. I wasn't sure if the sleeve was some sort of seal to keep water out of the boat. The picture on top is from the other engine to compare.. Thanks again. Jim

nah man, it's all good. if you even pull the shaft for some reason, you can remove it completely. they initially designed it to protect the shaft from ropes/etc, but as you can see, there are useless.

Nice! That news is da balls. You guya are a huge help to us rookies. Bought the boat last september had a seadoo guy check it out. Boat has been great a ton of fun just don't know much. Yet anyway. The only other issue I had was when I didn't drain the boat completly between toes to the lake and I think a little water got in the engine somehow. Boat started out fine then one engine lost power. Got the boat home pulled the plugs fogged the engine ran it for a while and all was well. Thanks again think I'll have a beer to the good news!

I am no expert, but I would recommend doing all your repairs yourself, with a shop manual, these forums and a 30 dollar tool kit from Wal-Mart you can fix anything.

Pulled mine out today- ha ha pics

Mine was broken off as well at the back , in the front end I found after pulling the drive shaft that it was pushed forward and the looks like it had melted off the retainng tabs. see attach. I was also suprised to see that blue ring which I would assume butts up against the through hull fitting forming some kind of seal when the protecter is tight aagainst it. There is no part like the ring mentioned anywhere in parts lists.

According to Group K http://www.groupk.com/sd720jetbt.htm (scroll dow to shaft protecter) a short piece of the protecter has to be there for sealing ??? If this is true Ill need a new one.

What is actually sealing out the water, is it the carbon ring and rubber boot?
If so the rubber boot must be filled with water normally.
