Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and to these fun toys. I just got a 97 Challenger 1800 with supposedly only 83 hours on it. The boat is in perfect shape so I have no reason to believe otherwise, but here's the problem. The boat hasn't been run from what I understand in about 18 months. I took it out to the lake last weekend and boy both 787's sounded like they were knocking or something. The first thing I suspected was the gas was old and needed to be replaced. After siphoning the gas and replacing it with new 91 octane with no ethanol both engines really started to come to life in about 10 mins of running time. Now the port engine runs what I would say perfect revving up to 7,000 rpms with no issues, however the starboard engine runs fine revs up just as quick as the port but it will not rev any higher than 5,000 rpms. Does anyone have any ideas what I should do first? Thanks!

Are these engines carburated? If they are you probably got a jet gummed up. I'm just guessing here as I have no clue what I'm talking about ;-)

Yes they are Rotax 787's carbureted engines. Truefully I haven't had a chance to run the boat more than about an hour, so maybe it'll just fix itself?

You may still have some old gas in the tank, but it should be diluted by now dependent on how much new gas you put it. I sucked all the gas out of my lines at the carbs - not that you need to do that now.
I would clean the fuel filters next - very easy to do, just follow the fuel lines and you will see small white canisters with black tops IIRC.
Change spark plugs and gap the news ones.
I would pull the plug wires out of the plug boots at the motor, snip the very end off and insert back in the plug boots (gives a fresh contact).
If none of this helps I would do a compression check and do a carb clean.

starboard/port side carbies..

with sit'n that long, even with one of motors run'n great, i'd still pull off carbs and go thru them( carb cleaner), the accelerator pump/and fittings might be clogged, and/or carb itself full of whatever, internal filters,..etc.
Reason I say, is, I just purchased one also, port motor sounded great, starboard starv'n for gas. Went thru those carbs (starboard), now she idles/throttles awesome, so figured, why not go thru "port" side carbs,...come to find out, the settings were all outta whack, to compensate for poor performance...

Thanks guys, I have some free time tomorrow, so I'll see what I can do.

eyah stud, take ur time, pull carbs apart carefully, so, dont rip any gaskets, and should be good-to-go, with a thorough clean'n. If brass fittings inside throat of carb clogged, i use a "bic" lightwer, kept some heat on it for couple seconds, then use carb cleaner, shoot that sh** out...

:agree:
Clean the fuel system, don't forget fuel selector switch, don't run it at WOT until you get it sorted because it is probably running lean and can burn a piston. Check plug colour.
Congrats on the new toy, you will love it once you get it sorted. I reckon they are one of the best models, size, power.
