Hello All,

I am rebuilding my top end - 97 xp and have taken off my cylinders and can clearly see into the crank case.

There is a lot of muddy grayish liquid in the crankcase. Picks attached.

What am I supposed to see? Could this mean water has gotten in.

Also one had allot more than the other.

Thanks!

Thanks RFoster130,

I am really not familiar with a crank case. What is the ideal environment in there? Should it just be a lubricant? If I don't do a full re-build at this point. Should I just drain that muddy soup (well take it out with a large syringe) and then what?

Thanks so much

Grey sludge

Someone correct me if I am wrong
If you have a muddy grey sludge it IS a sign that aluminium is being worn away.Somewhere.
Crank bearings?Your piston looked scuffed.
Grey sludge is not good.Something is amiss.Hope this helps

Is there a drain or another way do remove this sludge/water? I have removed most of it with a syringe but there is still quite a bit left.

Thanks

Theres suppose to be nothing in there if I remember correctly except gas/2stroke mix and air thats it. You have bad crank rotary gear seals oils getting past and filling up the bottom of the crankcase. You need to have your crank broken and put new seals and bearing or buy a rebuilt one.

Thanks mustang, thats bad news :( There was definialty some water in there as well. The weird thing is that it was running for 2 weekends before it died and it was not tipped. How could it be running if this sludge was down in the crankcase mixing with the fuel........ weird

Removing Sludge

Take a shop vac and put a 1/4 inch hose into the 2 in vac hose, plug the difference with a rag... and suck the sludge out with the 1/4 inch hose.

Great idea, there will be some of this residue left, I guess there is nothing I can do about that. I'm sure it will still run fine.

remember shop vacs make static

if the goo smeels like gasoline too much i'd thin it down with wd-40.
wd-40 has kerosene in it, but the gasses don't expand to be explosive like gasoline.
You could rince the case down with WD to get more residue out

See how dark the rod is where it connects to the crankshaft? That means the rod bearing is bad and this crank has already failed. Replace the crank.
DAWG

Yeah I was trying to say that before. That engine is done and needs a full rebuild. Simply getting the goop out and adding a new top end isnt going to fix it. It would be on borrowed time before something fails and put a hole in the motor that cant be fixed.
