So first look at the new 97 xp I see no visual damage of top end down the rave valve Chanel's. I then charged the battery and installed. The key gets no beeps no action, the gauges do light up when I double tap the start button. Any thoughts? Fried mpem? Even when I stick the gsx key on I don't get the long beep

Likely the beeper is dead. You can get a radio shack one for cheap. Search the forum for the part number. Sometimes you can get a beeper to work if you blow some compressed air into it. You can open the rear electrical box and then disconnect the plug that goes into the starter solenoid. Put a meter in the plug on dc voltage, put the key on and have someone hit the start button. You should see the meter jump to 12v. If so, the solenoid may be bad. If not, then more mpem or dess testing is needed. Worse case, you can send it to Minnetonka4me and he can test it for you. (he just did one for me). HOPEFULLY the MPEM is not fried because the 97 is REALLY pricy... Blow out the beeper or put a meter or light on the beeper wires and that may give you more information as well.
Keep us updated

I'll check solenoid but I don't think it's a beeper issue, it does nothing when key is attached. I may have to send it out for a check

Clean and protect all your ground wires with Dielectric grease. If you have the multiple connection one connected to the top of the Mag cover take if off and do the same procedure. Make sure it's bolted down solid. Check the wire diagram for the Ski, it may have a ground wire to the coil / solnoid box that's bad. You can get beeper from Radio shack or electronic supply place for like $15 - $20. Solder it on the lead ends. Wire tie it to mounting prongs.

The dess post could be shot. Did you try hitting the start button 5 times to go into diagnostic mode? Checked all the fuses, front and back?

What is this you say about 5 times diagnostic mode??!! No but that will be next!!
Ok so I think I have good news, when I made the trade the owner said nothing more then "motor locked up"
I'm always weary so I first wanted to pull rave valves and have a peek, I saw no damage, then install working battery, no beeps nothing.
I then checked for Voktage at solenoid, none at starter side with button pushed. I then took some #6 wire and jumped the solenoid and she turned over!!!!! Motor not locked up. I haven't done compression yet but I have a good feeling.
Now I have yo figure out mpem thing. I'll go push 5 times. Any other thoughts would be appreciated

So, 5 pushes of start switch and nothing. 2 pushes brings gauges up. I'm hopeful once I figure out this electrical issue is I may not have to rebuild and that would be awesome!!!

The DESS post on your XP has three wires. the black & Black/yelow are connected to a magnetic reed switch in the post that powers up the MPEM when it closes. its normally an open loop when the key is removed. Its possible the switch has gone bad, or a maybe a problem with the magnet in the key if you only have one?

Pull the #1 plug from the MPEM & check continuity with a multimeter across wires #7 & #15 it should be open, & then short (close) when the lanyard is placed on the post. If it stays open you probably have a bad post.

If you look close at the plug, you will see the pinout numbers on them too.

Oh great info, thanks!! From memory it looked liked I only have one big plug on the mpem, does that sound right?
Thanks for the help!!

There should be 2 plugs & they're labeled 1 & 2. I think MY XP had the mpem mounted in the very front of the ski.

This forum us shockingly helpful for trouble shooting tips.
I only see one plug but it matched the diagram perfect. Open circuit with or without key, even put my known good key on from my gsx and nothing. So does it looks like a post, yes?

97 XP, right? Pretty sure there should be two plugs. Are the wires you testing black & black/yellow at the plug?

Hard to tell, I'm testing 7 and 15, there's a boot so hard to tell, I'll go check

Thank you!! You are totally right, darn vent tube was hiding the plug. I was checking number 2.
Just to be clear though the picture you have counts left to right but the pack of the plug is numbered right to left, so when facing plug I am testing bottom row second from far right and second row furthest right(yellow) correct?

Sounds like you have the correct pinout. before ordering the post, you can still test to make sure. Pin 1-7 is a common ground, & the ground is returned on 1-15 when they key is installed, so you could install the key & then supply a common ground to yellow/black & see if it powers up. If it was me, I would pull the bars apart & jump those two wires right at the switch to make sure its bad. could be a connector, or a chafed wire somewhere. worth making sure, but it sounds like you found why its not turning on anyway.

There are a few guys on the forum here that sell used parts too if you want to go that route.

First off thank you so much for all your help you have been awesome!
I would like to try this test but want to be sure so I don't fry something, you want me to ground out the yellow and black with key on post? This should power ski up?

Again thank you!

if you jump across the switch, you don't need the key. It won't start, but should power the gauges up and perhaps give you a single beep if your beeper is good.

Which will let me know the switch is bad, got it, excited to get home from work! Super excited that this may not need a rebuild, then I feel I really got a good deal!!
