I am trying to drive the failed outer bearing race from the impeller housing on the 02 GTX. Not having the best of luck.
From the looks of it, the bearing failed from water getting in. there where signs of some rust among the debris.

I have a 30 ton manual, hydraulic press & I have heated the housing to 250+ & it will not budge. In fact, I have had my press for 12 years & have never had anything that has made me wonder if the press was going to break first.

Don't really want to take it past 300 degrees because the vanes are transferring the heat to the outside edges to around 150 right now. I think anything more & I might start melting the plastic housing.....

I have it in the freezer right now.........

I was going to suggest the freezer before taking heat to the plastic housing of the earlier 4Tecs.

Left it in the freezer for 2 hours @ -3 degrees, no go, then tried to quickly heat the housing again hoping the bearing would stay shrunk a little. Nothing....... So I decided to use a longer handle on the press & pulled. I surpassed the 30 ton rating & bent a 3/4" solid metal plate on the top of the press. I think its now safe to say the bearing is never coming out. :(

I hate loosing.......

Sounds like it is in there very well.

I also hate to loose. In the past I have taken a torch and sliced into the race one the bearing and cage were out if the way. I normally do it on two sides. It weakens the race and gets rid of any rust or adhesive due to the heat.

Nothing to lose at this point.

Good point! At least if I can't win, I can destroy it..... :D

I got it out! Based on your idea of big heat I decided to weld some beads with the MIG on the inside of the race. One pop, & it slid right out!

Now that its out, I see there is some damage from where broken bearing debris rubbed on the housing. I'll see if I can post a picture.
Because I don't have the new parts in hand, I am not sure if this is in an area that will cause a problem of not.

here's a picture. You can see were the broken bearing chewed on the seating edge of the housing, but the new bearing should fit fine & I don't think the edge will effect anything the more I look at it.

It surprises me though, that the shaft seal behind the impeller has no retainer to keep it in place. Just pushed in place with an o-ring. From the pictures I have seen, it would appear that a retainer was added in later years.

So I have a chance to purchase a plastic 4tec drive from a 2006 GTI. Are the inside parts interchangeable to my 2002 housing?
I would rather keep the metal housing if I can, however when I looked up the part numbers between the 2002 pump & the 2006, the shaft oil seal was the only thing that appeared to be the same. The shaft, bearing, & spacer all have different parts numbers, but maybe these are just newer updated parts but are interchangeable?

The damage I can see shouldn't be an issue. I there are raised burrs above the seating surface I'd grind them off. But I doubt there is based that the race was sitting flush.

Check with @minnetoma4me on that. He will know for sure. And will have parts if need be in most cases.

I'd keep the metal case.

Not a bad idea, however my housing is in good shape, so worst case scenario I could buy a new bearing rebuild kit for it, but I do need a shaft & sleeve/spacer. so while that would be expensive new, it would still be cheaper than a complete pump.

I looked up aftermarket bearing part numbers & it would seem the 06 is a different bearing than the 02. Not sure if thats because the OD of the bearing is different, or the ID. But something is different.

Decided to suck it up & order a new impeller shaft & sleeve.

Is there any reason I shouldn't use this rebuilt kit from OSD? The price on the kit, is less than the price of just the bearing from BRP.

Otherwise, is there a part number to cross reference the bearing? I have a good friend who can get me a good US built bearing, but would need a number from an original. something I don't have...

Thanks, 68RT
