Hello I am wondering how to make my sea doo go faster. My thought is to put a newer motor in it is this possible and if so how big can i go . I own a 1989 sl in mint condition pictures in my album. thanks for any input!

You can do anything you want... but it's going to get expensive, and it would be cheaper in the long run to find a mid 90's XP 800 if you want a fast ski.

But... to answer your question. The easiest swap would be a 720 motor. It will basically bolt in, but to take advantage of it, you will need an aftermarket rev limiter that is good to 7000 rpm. (yours is 6500).

To do it, you will need a complete engine, (carbs to pipe) and the CDI unit.

Thank you I will have to look into that i blindly bought this sea doo a few years back for 1400 but it was and is in mint condition I just dont think its gonna have enough power to pull some one behind it seeing how i have to pretty much use all my weight to get the thing to plane out on the water. but thanks ill have to look into that do u know about how much a full motor and rev limiter will run and about how much faster will this motor be compared to the current one that is in it.

I just looked at your pics, and I made a post in one of your other threads.

I think that's an SP... not an SL. As far as I know... there wasn't an SL... but either way... all the ski's around 1990 were the same other than colors.

to start... it's illegal to tow a skier with that ski. In the USA, you have to have a minimum of 3 seats. The mirror idea in your other thread is false, since the diver needs to watching the water, and not the skier. (that's what a spotter is for)

as far as the power thing... I'm 235, and my 90 Si moves pretty good. I'm not going to say that it "Jumps" out of the water... but if I spin it hard... it is back up on step is just a couple seconds. If you are having a hard time moving... you may need to check over your pump, impeller, and driveshaft seal.

As far as the engine swap... like I was saying... it will get expensive, and honestly, you can just buy a complete, running mid 90's ski for less money than the parts. There is a large following for the mid 90's seadoos, so parts aren't cheap. I personally have bought a couple just to part out on ebay. An ugly $500 ski will get you about $3k as parts.

But... to answer your question... expect to pay $800 or so for a complete running (but used) 720 engine, and then about $100 for a used rev limiter. But, in turn, you can sell you 587 engine for about $400.

If you move forward with the swap... let us know, and we will help.

I personally will probably be doing that same swap this winter. I have a 720 sitting in my shop. I was going to do it before this summer... but the stock engine ran so good... I figured I would just run it, as is.
