M2 drive stator seal removal/replacement

I have removed the stator from the M2 drive (Utopia 205) after finding a bit of water with the oil during winterization. The seal requires replacement and I need a some instructions on how to remove the existing "protector" and seal. Anyone give me a quick totorial?? Thanks
 
The Mercury seal puller part number is 91-83165M, but you should be able to gently pry the seal out. Just be sure not to get in too deep with your pry tool or you risk gouging the surface where the seal sits in the housing. If you do, you may have to replace the stator. To reinstall the seal find a socket that is about the same OD as the seal.

Ok, problem resolved. The seal protecor is really a "plastic" protector and not a retainer. It is easily removed with minimal prying. The damaged seal was a bit more difficult but I had no problem prying it out without damaging the stator surface.

Correct, it just presses into place.

When replacing the seal, I recommend applying a thin layer of anerobic gasket maker to the seating surface of the stator housing against which the new seal will rest. This will fill in any irregularities between the housing and the seal and insure it is water- and lube-tight. Gasket maker is not adhesive, so it will not prevent you from replacing the seal again later should that become necessary.

Then, when reinstalling the stator, use a finger to apply a generous layer of lube on the new seal (like you do when replacing an oil filter) AND on the end of the impeller shaft. The shaft is beveled there to help protect the seal, but lubing it can't hurt and will help protect your new seal. Use gentle pressure and a bit of rotation as you first get the shaft through the seal, then orient properly to seat the stator against the wear ring.

No problem replacing the seal. Thanks for the suggestion re the gasket maker suggestion. Pretty much takes care of any water or oil getting around the seal. Stator replacement went smoothly.
