Looking to purchase an 03 XP DI, warnings? performance options?

Good morning everybody, I've always wanted a jet ski and picked up a 94 tigershark 640 a while back and have never been able to get it running. Just found recently that it has low compression on one of the cylinders (80 psi and 125 psi on the other). I'm looking to upgrade to something more reliable, powerfull, features, less hours, and less work.

I found a 2003 XP DI with 75 hours on it and a double trailor for about 4500. I was wondering if this is a good price and how reliable these engines are. I like the fact that its a 2 cycle for reliability but I know that BRP had problems with their early direction injection two cycle engines as the Evinrude Ficht's were plagued with issues. This being the first model year Seadoo introduced the DI line worries me. I was googling for issues with this ski and came across the below thread which is how I found this forum.

It seems his problem was more misdiagnosis. So what do you guys think about the XP DI? reliable? are there any performance upgrades for it?

Find yourself a model with carburetors.
I think the DI models require a degree in engineering to fix

Hi R37ribution, and welcome to the forum.

OCOD is correct. As you have read up on these you'll know they are touchy and delicate.

VB Township is in Michigan I assume, I think near Metro Airport??? or is it Belleville area? Where do you like to ride?

Yep, Belleville area. The only riding I've done is on my bike... as I said I've had this carburated ski for a few years and never rode it - I don't have time to rebuild an engine and have enough older cars/boats/house projects to work on so I was just hoping for something newer that I could start up and go - that's what I did with my bike and I couldn't be happier. Afterfall these are pleasure craft right? White Lake isn't far, off 96 right?

I have a 16' 1982 Starcraft that I've replaced the engine ('82 Evenrude 50hp to 95' Evinrude 115hp), floor, redone the seat arrangement on, larger permanent gas tank, still have the bow floor/console to redo. I typically take the boat down to the Detroit river. I've taken the trip from Elizabeth park to Jobby Nooner twice in my lil 16' bow rider (N side of lake st clair if you haven't been there). My buddy just bought a house up in Waterford and they have a ton of lakes that would suit my boat/ski.

The first ski I ever rode on did 82mph according to its speedo and it was badass. I've wanted one ever since. I was only 13 or so, so I was pretty light. It got up to about 75 and then I ducked behind the console and it made it up to 82. I wish I knew what it was, I couldn't flip it for the life of me - I use to water ski all the time so I wasn't new to the water, trust me I was giving it my best shot.

Anyways, I like 2 cycles as I said for the reliability and ease of winterizing. I was thinking the XP DI was the way to go with the DI for more power/economy but sounds like its a headache like the ski I got now. ugh

Unless you buy new that will never happen or be prepared to spend more for a 10 yr old machine b/c someone already spent time to fix it.........

I'm North of Walled Lake. I used to live on Wolverine Lake.
Now I'm closer to Union Lake. Just south of M-59....North of Northern High School.

Yeah, I get that part. I was thinking with only 75 hours on it I'd get some good time from it. I was more looking for input on down the road reliability - much like how in cars you might have a model that's plagued with transmission failures, or in this case air pump and sensor failures seem common on the xp di...

Bla, he says it looks like its sold anyways... I really like the look of the ski and the double trailor was really attractive oh well.

@Seadoobuddy - He's off Cass Lake, I'm pretty sure Union Lake isn't far from him. I meant he's in Waterford sorry

Just would hate to see your next thread be "I bought a Headache"
If you want a simple yet reliable ski look for the 96 xp with the 787 engine or any ski w/a 717 engine.

The 717 has less parts to worry about VS 787 but not as powerful.

The skis with the 951 are ticking time bombs

That friend of mine in Waterford just pointed out that non-DI 2-cycle engines are going to be banned on Dec 31st 2012 by a federal law and it will likely expand beyond Glen Canyon. If I want a 2-cycle its going to have to be DI if I don't want to be limited - I'm sure these restrictions will reach Michigan in the near future:
