im looking to replace the *&^%ty standard speakers in my 05 sportster any ideas for something thatl fit right in there ?

Sorry to say but whatever you put in isn't gona give you a drastic difference unless you amp them and add more. It will improve some but pry not enough to notice while your driving.

i am leaning towards an amp only when i get my tower speakers ...
just looking for a quick fix for the moment becouse the speakers in now will crackle if i crank sterio up to 60%
i like the sony ones guys do they do them in 200 watt?

for tower speakers, what are yo looking to do? do you want them for when you are lounging in the water some wher or do you want to be able to here them while you are wakeboarding? if while wakeboarding i would look to wards horns instead of speakers. i have the 6.5's and an amp on them and still can hear them when im being pulled. maybe if i get another set it may help but i might rather spend the money towards some horns. but when im parked at the beach and such the speakers do fine but bass is little to none with them.

The Sony's should definitely help a little but they will need power. If you're not going to use an amplifier then all of the power will come from your head unit. Now your spliting about 50 watts (typically) into 4 speakers (i'm assuming 4?). Realistcally those speakers are getting 8 or 9 watts when they can actually handle 45 watts RMS. Also keep in mind it's actually better to have too much power going to them than not enough.

If you have a decent CD Player you should be fine with the Sony's especially if you're just looking for a quick / inexpensive fix (you will be happy). But you would be shocked to see the difference once they are amplified.

I really think you get what you pay for. Sony makes great stuff, but when you are paying $35 a set, there is a reason they are that cheap. I would spend a little extra money or they wont sound any better than what you have already. I went with the Kicker KM620's.

They sound great for the price. But it all comes down to what you think sounds good, since it is your boat. If you like the Sony's that you used before, then go with them.

I'm a dealer for Sony/ Clarion/ Jbl. If you have a specific model you want, let me know and I shoot you a price.

RF,

I appreciate the "You get what you pay for" philisophy but the Sonys MSRP for much much more and that one outfit has them at unbelieveable prices. Does Kicker generally have better sound than other brands?

I don't mean that in a derogatory way. I went and looked at the Sonys after I wrote that. Seems like a bargain since Sony has them for like 125. I heard a set of the Kicker's on a friends boat and just like the sound so that is what I went with. It all comes down to personal preference really as long as you are going with a marine rated speaker and one of the brands that makes quality stuff.

Each manufacturers have several lines of speakers...from low end to their top shelf equipments. I agree with the statement that you get what you pay for...and some of us are finding out, that you can, once in a while, buy top end equipment for a very reasonable price. Recently, a friend of mine was updating his tv and bought a home theater in a box. He and I had heated argument...sic discussion about the quality of such set versus higher end stereo equipment. Finally, upon my insistence, he sat and demoed one of these theater set versus a home theater in a box. He said it was night and day.

When you are dealing with sounds for a boat, there are some distinctive challenges. First of all, there is an open space to project the sound. You are going to need a lot of power..and that mean amps. The second is you need speakers that are going to handle the power. Lastly, the construction of the material in the speakers are what makes the price difference. Cheaper material mean inexpensive speakers. I would akin trying to equip a boat the same as trying to equip a convertible.

I had a set of kickers on my tower. They lasted 1 year. You win some you loose some.
My .02: sonys, polks, infinity are good brand marine speakers. jbl, kicker, are decent but midgrade if you axe me. jensen, clarion (speakers only, not head units)and whatever the brand of the day is their giving away on ebay is, are below a well standard and do not handle power well. Again its just my opinion.

JL Audio is the s**. I picked up the summer special with amp with no subwoofer and happy with the sound!
