Leaking Drive shaft seal on 96 XPS

Hello all, as I am new to the Seadoo world, can any of you experienced guys tell me why water is seeping into the engine compartment via the driveshaft of my 96 XPS.

The problem started when I put the seadoo in the water after a two year shore leave and I planned to lube everything up at the dock. When I pulled the seat off, I noticed a broken gear clamp on the drive shaft seal.

Please confirm, should the seal (with the grease nipple) rotate on the drive shaft? Well it slides up and down the shaft but it can't rotate. Also the second pic shows what I believe is the remaining portion of a hull seal connection? Am I right or do I have the intended arrangement all wrong? ie. am I looking at removing the impeller and inserting a new hull seal?

Thanks for any help you guys can throw my way.

1) No... the seal does not spin with the shaft.

2) Your though hull fitting is melted. It should be a tube that the rubber boot can clamp to.

Leaking Drive shaft on 96 SPX

Hey guys (Lou and Dr Honda), thanks for confirming my suspicions. I will endeavour to replace the damaged hull fitting and bearing/ seal.

The video was great and I was wondering if there was another video just for pulling off the jet pump and possibly swapping out a hull fitting. I saw the two for changing the oil, but I thought that a walk-through video showing the issues, especially re-assembly could prove useful and save me some bucks.

World of thanks again guys,
Dave

I don't know of other videos but there are other threads on this forum about this problem, some are located on the bottom of this page.

Leaky shaft seal

Hey undies1993, with Lou's great links and some patience, the repair was pretty easy. I had never removed the nozzle and jet pump before, so the video were very handy for getting me up to speed. I also refered to Dr.Honda's great guide on "wear ring" replacement to get me up to speed on what to expect with the jet pump.
Long story short, my seadoo dealer provided me with a brass fitting made especially for this repair. I just had to trim away the remains of the original hull fitting (melted) and then insert the fitting in the remains of the hull fitting with some 2 part epoxy. I used JB weld after abrading the fitting's ID with some 80 grit emery paper.
The dealer also provided me with the other repair requirements, ie. the roller bearing and 2 seals for the bearing carrier and a new hose.
After lots of fun with removing the jet pump, which was glued to the transom by "hill billies" (quote taken from Dr.Honda) and a good cleanup/painting of the parts, the doo was quickly assembled, greased (excessively) and put back in the water with no complaints.
Hope this helps and let me know if you have any problems.
Also, many big thanks to Lou, Dr.Honda and all the others who have posted great literature and videos that really helped me to prepare for this job.

I used JB weld too. Seems to have worked fine. I grease it every time I take it out of the water so the gear doesn't rust. I had put mine back together and had a leaking exhaust manifold. After a few hours of stress I finally got that fixed and it runs like it is brand new. :D:D
