The readout for lake temperature reads 120 degrees on my gti le rfi (2003). Have a manual but can't find where to troubleshoot or even where the sensor is located. I think I found it on the transom but maybe someone could help me troubleshoot. Have read that it may be connected to the speed sensor? Not sure, but if so, my speedometer and digital speedometer work fine. Any help is appreciated.

On older models it was built into the speed sensor. I think the speed sensors with it have 3 wires, where the others have 2.

is that the difference?! I paid $120 for a new speedo paddle wheel with 2 wires, when I could have had a cheaper 3 wire, and just... not hooked up that last wire (or cut it)? I wondered why you would need 3 wires for a speedo...

There also several variations of each one. You can google to see which ones are interchangeable. I think i have seen where others used a 3 wire though and just didnt hook up the last wire.

I only have the 01 manual;but:

Water Temperature Sensor
GTX Series and RX Series
The water temperature sensor is integrated with
the speed sensor located on the ride plate.
To check if the water temperature sensor is operational,
activate the Info Center and select the lake
temperature mode.
With a garden hose, spray the speed sensor with
water. The temperature reading on the Info Center
should adjust to the water temperature.
If not, replace the speed sensor.
