A Kissimmee man was injured when a jet ski he was riding exploded in Tampa Bay.
Pedro A. Velez, 21, was riding a friend's Kawasaki jet ski near the entrance to Smack's Bayou by Snell Isle at noon Thursday.
Police said Velez shut off the jet ski to wait for a friend to catch up. When he turned it back on, the jet ski exploded, throwing Velez into the water.
Velez was rescued from the water by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue with the assistance of a nearby boater. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with injuries described as not life-threatening.
Police said they believe the explosion and subsequent fire were caused by a leak in the fuel system, which was then ignited when Velez restarted the jet ski.
The damaged jet ski was turned over to its owner and has been removed from the area.
