Hey the most recent ski I picked up to part out came with a jet dynamics intake grate. Looks kinda cool but other than that I know nothing about it or why it would be better than a stock.

any thoughts. Should I use it or just sell

thanks

Well consider yourself lucky because that grate is probably one of the best out there for keeping your ski hooked up in rough water. I love mine!

jet.jpgThats what I like to hear.... It appears from the way its designed that it would really hold the rear of the ski down. Or at least thats what it looks like to me.

anyways here is a pic of one just like it

+2 on that. If you want to sell it then pm me. They are numbered and the number determines how aggressive the scoop is.

It's a 16. The casting is just always a little rough around the #. I don't know which # means what(yet) but I have a couple and want more. These grates will feed the pump better during all riding conditions without rubbing mph off your top speed.

I need to pull mine off to see what number it is. I'm still getting 56.3 on glass water with my bone stock 96 XP. Thats pretty good for having a "scoop" grate. Just a heads up your ski will feel like you put the brakes on if you run wide open and then let off to zero throttle. First time I did that standing up I almost went over the bars lol

Actually I just went out to check and mine clearly has a (6). If it is indeed a (16) then they are assuming that everyone knows the fist digit is always a 1 regardless if its printed or not.

The 6 and 16 are 2 different models. It's a 6, standard deep. The 16 is a extra deep model. The 17 is a medium deep.

Thanks Chester. I had only ever seen #'s in the teens before. I'm glad that you understand them cause I could not have got that one from common sense.

Ill see if I can get it apart so I can see what numbers are on it.

In this same sorta note would there be any preference between 2 pumps which both seem to have the bronze veins but one of them has an aluminum housing and the other plastic. Also the plastic one has a really long cone. Any idea why ?

So if these grates are better why did they not continue using them. Any reson I should not use it on the ski im putting together.

You should use it, but if your having second thoughts you can stick it in a flat rate box and mail it to me haha

i'm not a grate expert, and on flat water i've actually found the best grate to be no grate or stock grate.

I'd suggest tho, that there is no downside to using it except maybe a 1-2mph down grade at max speed, but the benefits likely outweigh the downside of that slight drop.

i'd say the main reason to not continue using is that "probably" they take down the high speed a tad, while offering better pickup at low speeds, or choppy water conditions. So if i'm a normal recreational rider that hits mostly smooth rivers and lakes, i'd probably do just as well with a stock grate, and not notice the difference If i'm a hard core rec rider with a modified engine or at the very least an aggressive riding style, then i'd probably notice the improvement.

IMO unless your the latter type, and you ride in chop or surf quite a bit and your jamming the throttle a lot out of turns, etc, then this grate won't really make a hug difference, but its benefits outweigh the negatives, the only real negative IMO is that slight loss of top speed, so unless your struggeling to keep up with your buddies with bigger faster ski's, then this grate will be fine.

Also it might save your azz someday if we have the zombie Apocalypse... put a grate like that in your left hand and a set of UMI handlebars in the right, then you can take on at least 3 of the walking dead with no issues, stick and move, stick and move.

the main reason not to use it would probably me money, and ski setup, on an x4 with stock 717 and a regular joe behind the bars then the stock grate is most likely just fine, so, if you can sell it for a fair price its money that can reduce the overall cost of the ski, or pay for a couple weekends of gas/oil.

you might simply want to put it on, (4 bolts) run the ski and see if you like how it feels, then for giggles, remove the grate and run it again (but caution, i think two of those screws are thru hull, so leave them in or you'll leak), then throw the stocker grate on and run and see if you feel the difference, if you really don't notice anything different, sell the aftermarket grate and put the stocker back on.

They are aftermarket, and I'd use it no questions asked. I had an UMI on my original 96 XP. I'd be neck and neck with another 96, as soon as there was a small boat wake from another boat, I'd stay hooked up in the water where he would start to porpoise. After that, he'd never catch up. Run with out it, then run with it, see which you like better. In time I'll pick one up for me new 96 XP for sure.

Not sure what ski your running, but 96 XP's used an o-ring to hold the stainless steel support ring(the other 1/2 of the carbon ring set up) in place--not the updated metal C-clip. So if you have the metal C-clip on your driveshaft your good to go or if your running a ski later than 96. The first run out with my UMI I almost sunk my ski, the grate loaded so much water that the pressure over came O-ring and blew the support ring up to the PTO.

Edit: I also ride in a good bit of choppy water, whether in the river or in the ocean/intercoastal waterways.
