Is octane the deciding factore in my Yamaha vs. Sea-doo purchase debate?

I am currently looking at a new 09 GTX or a Yamaha FX HO. The specs on the two are very similar, I've found a GTX for about $1000 less than my best price on the FX HO. However, here is my dilemna: our marina only carries 87 octane fuel. The Yamaha's are operated on 87 octane, while the Sea-doo's are 91. I am not about to have a stash of jerry cans at the cabin to fuel up with. I would rather just pull up to the pump and put in the 87. Now, I'm posting this in the Sea-doo forum to get your guy's opinions: can I run the GTX on only 87 octane? If not, I will be off to the Yamaha dealer!!!

Your runninging a lower compression motor with boost, to make sure you dont get engine knock, its best to run the higher octane. You can/will lose performance as well as the possibility of damaging your motor. I have a few questions that may help with your deciding factors.

Are you running in freshwater or salt water?
If salt water, your going to need to pull it out pretty frequently to flush it, so you might as well get pump gas from a local gas station.

Are you dropping it in the water each time you go out from a trailer, or keeping it docked?
This kinda ties into my first question.

Are there any other Marinas close by that have 91 octane?

I'll tell you what, i know someone with a FX HO, and my GTX 215 blows it out of the water, now, you can always look at the GTX155, it doesnt have boost s it doesn't need the 91 octane, and it performs pretty damn good from what i have heard, it doesn't have as hard of a hole shot, but top speed is pretty comparable.

Was reading the owners manual, just notices that you can use 87 octane in your ski, and it should not damage it. You wont get the best performance out of it, but it will work.(you will probably lose a few horsepower from not having that extra octane, but it should still ride good.)

Best of luck

Buy the SeaDoo and use the 87 octane

The motor compensates for the lower octane, you won't do any damage. Run the higher octane when you want to have maximum performance. I buy Lucas fuel conditioner and pay average $20/gallon (usually from Summit Racing). I run recommended 3oz/10 gal. Every gallon through my 04 GTX and 99 SK gets it and I swear by it. Use it in all my vehicles. It amazes to watch people pay $5 for a 5.25 oz bottle of it at the auto parts store

That is for 4 gallons delivered.

Thanks

Thanks for your input. First off, the nearest pump, other than the marina is about 10 miles away (on land, not water). I really don't want to have to go there to fill up jerry cans all the time.

I'm glad the owner's manual says the 87 will work. These machines will have more than enough power for me, so I'm not upset by loosing some HP.

It is good to know that you have compared the FX HO side by side with the GTX 215. What is the biggest difference, hole shot?

Hole shot and top speed are the main differences that i noticed, he is a bit more experienced rider than i am, and more in shape, so i was having a tough time keeping up with him as we were zig-zagging around the peirs in the bay. It was my first time doing that so was a bit nervous, but i kept up with him, and when we hit open water, i blasted past him.

As far as ride comfort, they are about the same, i think his was an 07 model. The pop up kleets are nice, but he actually liked the loops off of the handlebar area on the GTX. I liked the rear storage on the FX, had more space for anchor and what not, but the removeable storage bin on the GTX trumps it, and if you get a pair, you can do what i do, and keep one for wet storage, and one for dry. I was a bit envious of his cup holders though. You can fit a small gatoraid bottle in the small storage compartment on the GTX, but it can be pretty cramped in there if you want much more(i normally keep a dry rag to wip off my sunglasses when riding)

I have ridden both, and they both handle pretty much the same, from what i noticed anyways, that extra power helps kick the ass-end around though when you need to, but otherwise, not too much difference.

On of the big disadvantages of the GTX over the FXHO was the fuel tank and fuel consumption. When you run them hard, the GTX will need to make more frequent stops, but that being said, you should still get a good amount of time out on the water.

Looking back at what you were saying, i noticed you were looking at the FX HO, the one my friend has is the FX Cruiser HO, which looks similar, but with some comfort extras, kinda like comparing the RXT to the GTX.

I guess i have one more question for you, are you looking at the GTX 155 or the 215?

If its the 155, you should be on par with the FX HO, probably very close on top speed and whole shot, the 215 will launch you right out of the water, it will need a bit more maintenance in the long run, but its worth it :D

215

All along, I've been comparing the FX HO to the GTX 215. If it is actually more in line with the 155, it kind of sways me to the GTX 215, as the pricing is similar between the FX HO and the 215. I'm getting confident that I will be able to run it with 87 octane fuel.

Thanks
Darren
