Is it worth it?

Found a 2000 XP on CL local here for $1000. Comes with ski, nice trailer, and cover. Said it needs 2 pistons. I found the upper end rebuild kit online for $310. Seems like its worth it but is there anything I should look for since it needs pistons? And why would the pistons go bad? I know when people sell things they are salesmans and tell you what you want to hear. Thanks for any info/advise you can give me.

If you only rebuild the top end on a 13 year old engine... you are gonna have a bad time...

$700 w/trailer is a good offer. send the engine out, get it rebuilt w/a 1-2 year no fault warranty, and ride that baby.

thats pricy for a non running ski. cut it in half. (and knowing hours on the crank is helpful too)

unless you've rebuilt engines before, your looking at an adventure, but honestly if you have then you would already know that $1000 is too much. I just passed on the same ski two days ago for $600, partially because I didn't need the project that bad, but mainly because the owner didn't want to take $500, i would have drove it home for 500.

top end's go bad for lots of reasons, and you have to keep in mind that you need to find out the reason during diagnostics, or you'll cook another engine. so you'd have to factor in.

top end, gaskets, labor, shipping of cores, bottom end tear down, inspect and or replace crank, more gaskets, pull carbs, inspect/rebuild, drain fuel tank, change oil, maybe new mats, buffing, non working gauges ? rusty cables ? pull pump, inspect, rebuild if necessary, etc... all the while trying to figure out what cooked the pistons in the first place, etc... like I said... an adventure.

you could just replace the whole engine for about 1K, and get a warranty.. not that much more than what your investment will be if you factor time and money for a home rebuild.

$500-600 is a good entry point, $1000 is not... and when you fix it all up, and invest all that time and money, the ski will be worth about $2,000 maybe a little more. you could buy a running one for less if you shop around, save yourself a lot of time and trouble.

the only upside to this is that you'll know that the engine is now "solid" vs buying a running ski and not knowing how long it will last.

Keep in mind that buying the ski and rebuilding the motor is the easy part of getting a new to you ski. All the other items will nickle and dime you to death
carbs, fuel lines, filters, electronics, battery, jet pump, carbon seal, hose clamps, gaskets etc, etc. To get all of it in good shape and reliable will be another $3-500 just on miscellaneous items. That is why $500 ish for a non runner is about is far as you want to go

I am a big fan of going this route only because I like the idea of having a rebuilt motor so I know it is good and solid. The downside is the wait time for the rebuild. You can spend $1500-2000 on a runner and be on the water tomorrow, but it can grenade on you the next day.

Just my opinion

I would do 500 tops for the reasons mentioned above.

Assuming it still has the Grey Tempo fuel lines you will need an engine as you know it is fried, all new lines, filters, fuel selector (can clean it but it is only 20 bucks new), carbs rebuilt at a minimum.

At 500 you will likely have 2-grand into it by the time you do the engine and all that needs to be done to have a good running ski.

On the last few skis I got over the years I sent the motor off to SES. Does he still do good work? I still have a 01 GTS he did the motor in that was cracked and is still running strong!

Try to give him as low as he would take, the advise others gave you is right because the more money you don't give him you can put on the ski to make it run at is best with a fresh motor but if it messed up the pistons might as well get a complete rebuild engine with warranty and you should be set, I wouldn't spend the money on a top end and then the crank blows up and you are out of your new top end and now need a bottom end too.

I got it for $550. After talking to him more in detail about it he put a new motor in it last year. ran it a few times. then started loosing power and he didn't want to put anymore into it. The motor does look new. I pulled the head cover and the one cyl is scared bit. would it still be safe or worth a shot to just put a top end kit in it since the motor was replaced? What would/can cause the front cyl to scare up like that?

If the motor was bore maybe they didnt smooth the ports on the cylinder and it scratched the cylinder wall after the piston with rings got scratched, might be dirt that got in there, rings put wrong, rings didnt seat right, not much lubrication etc.

I was thinking about pulling off the head and sending it to SES and have him get at least that part of it right. then make sure the oil inj is working or convert to premix. any thoughts on that?
