Ok, so the past couple days I have gone out on the XP after work just to try and enjoy as much of the summer that is left as I can.

I have had 2 issues, one severe and one not so severe.

The first has occurred just after startup and idling out of the no wake zone. Basically I idle fine at about 1400 rpm until I roll into the throttle, once at about 2400 rpm the engine shakes and sputteres, it feels almost exactly like a REV limiter. During the strange behavior I see the RPM on my Trail Tech Tach jumping all alround 1400, 900, 2000, 1700. I am able to release the throttle and bring it back to idle and return to the dock.

I have tried RES and ON on the fuel selector and they have made no difference. Once I go back to the dock, pull the seat scratch my head and put the trailer back in the water it runs great (with one exception, see below). It is almost as though the engine responds to the threat of being put back on the trailer and decides to cooperate.

The second issue has only been noticable since I have started riding in the early evenings. During this time the winds have died down and the water is GLASS smooth, because the water is so smooth I have been doing a lot more part throttle cruising and with no disruptions from waves or reasons to change engine speed I have heard/felt the following. As I am cruising say about 50% throttle the engine sounds like this:

Its a tiny little hiccup, but it is noticeable if I am riding at WOT and carving and jumping it isn't an issue. But when I am just taking it easy at 40mph or so it is disconcerting.

I think these 2 problems are related but I wanted the SDF brain trust to give me their opinion.

I'm not saying it is, but it could be the voltage regulator/rectifier. Try disconnecting the red wire from the voltage regulator. What happens when it goes bad is it introduces AC voltage into the electrical system and makes the MPEM do some crazy things. When mine went bad it felt like the ski was running on one cylinder, then it would be O.K. for awhile. With the red wire disconnected the battery won't be charging.

Also just for kicks, and since it doesn't cost anything try trimming the spark plug wires back about 1/4".

Thanks for the reply. I will be headed to the lake this afternoon to see if I can replicate the problem.

I know the voltage regulator is located inside my front gray box, is there a way to disconnect the red wire without removing and cracking open the box. Does it lead somewhere external that has a connector?

I don't know of a way except to open the front E-box, you can open the box without removing it. There is another way you can test it, check for AC voltage across the battery at high idle.

In regards to the first issue, from what you're saying, it sounds like its running on one cylinder. I agree with trimming back the plug wires.

Perhaps I have a coil going out?

It idles fine and smooth, but once I get on the power it seems like a misfire.

I will trim the wires and see how that turns out.

Any other suggestions?

Currently using plugs with thread on cap (all they had) but, with my RPM jumping all over the place I am betting that the whole wire is not getting spark.

I bet I have a coil that is failing.

I will replace plugs and trim wires and see where we end up.

If one of those threaded caps comes off or loose, it will run to about 3000 rpm and feel and sound like its hitting the rev limiter. Check and make sure they're tight to rule that out.

Well, unplugging the red wire seems to have fixed the problem.

Anyone have recommendations on a good replacement regulator?

That is the right part number, osdparts has OEM used for $20 plus shipping which you can calculate on their site. And I'm sure Tonka has plenty too, hit him up. I got mine from osd while ordering some other new OEM parts.

Not too bad from the dealer, it retails for around $100.00. I'm thinking I got an OEM either from Ebay or Nick for around $50.00, but that's been a couple of years ago.
