Impeller wear rings... black, white, or stainless steel?

What's the performance difference between the black, white and stainless impeller wear rings? I need to replace my RXT's stock white wear ring before next spring... it has some pretty bad gashes in it (I bought the RXT in this condition, looks like it had sucked up some debris a few times under the previous ownership).

Why are some of the plastic rings white and other's black? If stainless steel wear ring is chosen, does that really wear or does it put all the wear-and-tear on the impeller instead?

Thanks for any insight, ya'll!

I think stainless is a bad idea. The wear ring is designed to do just that.....wear. You get debris caught in there with a stainless ring and instead of wearing the ring, it damages the impeller and shaft and all bearings wear out faster.

Personally, I like the factory rings. They fit, and they do their job of being a "Fuse" in the pump.

A stainless ring is great, but they are expensive, and when you wear one out... it's time for a full pump rebuild with new parts. (expensive)

100% true, stainless is good but will cost you alot more down the road. I noticed the aftermarket ones vary to much to really pin anything on it being a black or white thing.

I put a ss ring in my ski 5years ago...know how many times I've had to replace it?....0. Know how many times I've had to rebuild the pump?....0

I don't beach the ski...i don't suck up rocks...on the rare occasions I get a stick in there...it becomes salad.

The space/gap/tollerance between prop and ring are tighter and therefore more efficient than those allowed by oem rings...of which I'da probly gone through 3-4 by now.

Do the math.

I don't know this to be a fact, just an observation. 2-stroke seadoos' use use black wear rings, made out of a black rubberized material. 4-tek's use white wear rings made from a teflon material. This is based on OEM rings.

Either ski can use stainless steel, but the stainless is not really a wear ring, probably O.K. for racing but a bad idea on a recreational ski.

Big jetboat jetpumps like the Berkely and Legend use bronze wear rings. Bronze being a softer metal than the stainless steel impellers, so the impeller will not be damaged if it comes in contact I suppose. It cannot be good for stainless to contact stainless I'd think!

I've also recently seen a hybrid wear ring for Seadoo's that's delrin (plastic) with a thin inner layer of stainless steel. I'm not sure what the benefits of that are either.
