I need to get in the water!

My bindings/wakeboard just came in and im soo stoked to put them to use. I don't care if its winter!

But where can I go?

I live in southern california and I can't really think of anywhere to go thats close to home besides Pyramid lake or Castaic lake. Do you guys know of any spots near SoCal that I can drop the boat and finally scratch this wakeboarding itch?

My plan for this weekend is to head up to Big Bear, snowboard as much as possible, come home, pick up the boat and head out for Pyramid lake to get on that wakeboard. I'll post pics if it all works out as planned.

Worst case scenario, I wont have enough time to go to Pyramid and I'll end up going to the marina after snowboarding and try my hand at ocean wakeboarding (heh I'll deffinitly post pics of that if it comes to it)

I am up at 4am with the same itch. The water is around 60-65, air is 71 at 4am, bound to get warmer, and I recently bought bindings/straps that I mounted to my 6'4" Rusty thruster. My boat is in winter storage, but my dad wants to take the XP out, so we may mess around with it this afternoon.

When I lived in So Cal, we did Castaic a couple times. Most of the time we drove out to Mayflower Park in Blythe on the Colorado River. But that is more of a weekend trip, not a day trip. Also Parker dam and Havasu.

Is there any water at Big Bear Lake this time of year? Do them both at the same time. Might be a bit chilly...but that is what wet-suits are for.

I would guess Castaic is your best bet this time of year.

Oh Damn!

Just looked up the surf report for today, and 15-25 mph winds from the south.

There goes any chance for boating, and definitely for any kind of tow surfing:ack:

And it is supposed to get all the way up to 77 today...

Yeah theres a lake up in Big Bear but its frozen over in some places so I'm pretty sure they dont allow boats to take off during the winter.

And the wind is indeed pretty gnarly right now, but I'm hoping by Sunday it'll magically die down and I'll be able to get out there

Yah, really...only cure i found, was to hook up da boat,..works for me. Only place I found worth rip'n up is the ocean(Dana Point), jam out Monday, rip around, throw a few cast, then try tackl'n the lobster fishing action, come the evening...

Well it was deffinitly one of those weekends...

Traffic was absolutely ridiculous on the way up to Bear. Took us 6 hours to get up the mountain when it usually takes under 2 hours. Only got to snowboard for a few runs and had to head home. Which also took about 6 hours due to the same traffic.

hah but it gets worse...

So we took the boat out the next day to Castaic Lake. Seems I was carrying some sort of traffic magnet on me because once again we were immersed in unusually heavey traffic all the way there. Even better, we were greeted by a white-capped, windy, stormy lake when we finally arrived. After avoiding a near-disaster at the extremely breezy launching ramp, we miraculously managed to chop our way over to a semi-rideable area of the lake. I figured it was worth the trouble so I threw on the wetsuit and jumped in with the shortboard.

Got maybe 20 minutes of riding in and my hand started to cramp up since my handle-gripping muscles have atrophied since the last time I've been out. So I'm sitting there in the suprisingly warm water (minus the wind-chill), on my board, relaxing, waiting for my grip to recharge, when all of a sudden the wind starts drifting the boat towards me. Now mind you my crew (the family) is brand new to boating and I often assume they know certain things about the boat. Well unbeknownst to anyone on-board, the rope starts to sink under the boat as it comes near me and to my horror, the driver throttles a bit to get the boat away from me and BAM! you guessed it, the ski rope gets sucked up by the motor. Classic jetboating-noobie mistake. Well we suffered a painfully silent, windy ride back to the ramp at 4 miles per hour.

Heh, I'll probably start another thread with step by step pictures as I take off the grate and untagle the rope. I'm not sure what a bent impellar or a broken wear ring look like so I think its better if I show you guys as I go along to ensure I get everything taken care of the right way. And hey maybe it'll serve as a helpful visual for anyone else who encounters the same problem.

On the brightside; somehow, amidst all the traffic, delays, and frustration, the family and I actually had some sort of fun. And I guess I did "get in the water." A memorable weekend to say the least.

Hers a little pic from the short-lived joy I did manage to have on the water:

Oh, you did what I did! I thought you had a "wake board" not a surfboard with bindings attached.

That looks like EXACTLY what I want to do!!!:hurray::hurray::hurray:

Show a pic of your board. I wanna see if you have the same or similar bindings.

I got mine from some place up in Oregon near the Bend, made more for converting your short board into a kite-surfing board. I figured it would do what i need...

These are basically adhesive Traction with some screwholes in them to screw down the straps.

well actually thats just a regular ordinary surf board ("realm" from costco) with no straps or anything...

I had my actual wakeboard (o'brien deck, hyperlite bindings) onboard but it looked too choppy to take out so I just took the surf out instead figuring it would handle the chop better...

I'm just rockin surf wax on the board but I'm lookin to throw some traction pads like yours on there and dedicate it to wake surfing (don't really feel like paying $200 for an actual "wakesurf" board) However, I had a good time on it without the straps so I think I can do without them, its nice to be able to change the feet stance up, specially when carving or cutting.

I did it when I was back in college without straps, and it severely limited what I could do on the wave (unless you are really good at landing airs while your top half is being pulled along). It was fun, but I really wanted to try it with straps.

This rusty is 12 years old, and was replaced with another "daily driver" 2 years ago, so I could put straps on this one and still have my full quiver.

Besides, I have put on 30 pounds in the past 12 years, and the 6'4" is only good for really big and clean days. My new one is 6'6" and a little wider and thicker.

Dad wants to pull me into hurricane and storm surf with the XP and the strap on rusty, and I want to just play on the river with it behind the boat. I find waterskiing boring, and wakeboarding just seems much more like my true love of surfing.

when you say "air" do you mean from wake to wake or just off the lip and back on the same side of the wake?

You better trust your dad's driving if you take him up on towing into stormy surf. Seems like the hardest part is for the driver to recover the downed surfer if he falls and gets stuck inbetween sets.

but hah yeah the river is still plenty fun

Air=any leaving the water with the board. I never even thought of jumping from wake to wake with a surfboard. I never thought I could get the lift behind my Challenger, which puts out so little of a wake. So I would be impressed with even an off-the-lip.

Luckily, down here on the Texas gulf coast, if you wipe out, you don't get shoved to the bottom like you do on the Pacific coast. I have wiped out at Huntington where it pushed me to the bottom for over 45 seconds, and pushed my face into the sand so I came up with a mouthful of sand. That doesn't happen down here. The waves are what you guys call "wind-chop" most of the time. Seldom do we get a ground swell. I have never wiped out in Texas where I couldn't just right myself and hop back up on the board in less than 15 seconds.

But, because of that, our waves are weak most of the time, so if you get a 15 foot storm swell, it is nearly always impossible to paddle in, unless you are on a long board. I don't like the longboard ride, so I try to ride short whenever possible, even if I don't get as long or as good of a ride.

But if I was able to pick up the speed to drop in from the XP, I could get a pretty good ride since I don't have to paddle in to a weak, but big, wave.

At this point, it is all talk, but dad LOVES to ride the XP in big waves, and I LOVE to surf them, so the combo is right.

Last hurricane (not Ike, we evacuated for that one) I was TRYING to surf about 12' surf, and didn't catch much of anything. My dad was out on the XP having a blast, and I was jealous (and pi$$ed). He said he tried to find me to swap out so I could ride a little but he couldn't find me in the lineup. THAT was when I decided to strap up the board and have that on the side if the surf isn't up to par.

well dad and I managed to get the rope out without taking off the intake grate
(front screws were stripping up pretty bad) so although it was a hassle we managed to get the job done.

Took the boat out yesterday to Pyramid Lake with our fingers crossed and thankfully everything seemed to be working great. There was a slight increase in RPM on said motor over the other one, but I would say the difference is negligble.

Now the only problem is the water seems to be consistently getting colder, even with my suit on!

WUS!!! How OLD are you, anyways...

I admit, though, I haven't surfed for about six months, haven't tried to ski for about 4 months, and haven't been in the water to swim for about 3 or 4 months either.

So I am as big, or bigger, a WUS than you...

Yeah, man, keep in the water.

As soon as I got to where I let the cold keep me out, I put on 30 lbs...:(

hey

scooper hey U guys when you get to wisconsin there is nothing much to do but drive on the lake drink:cheers:cold beer eat brats and cheese and as far as gaining weight OH yeah very easy to do .
