i am totally lost on this one. Last weekend i took out my 96 xp and the battery was drained. I finally got it to run and because its the first time out i wanted to run it. About a quarter mile out the battery took a crap. I got a new battery and now it wont start. It has pleanty of power but when you try to start it all you hear a a thud. So i hit the start button a few times and it thuds but then sounds like the starter is missing teeth and just spinning. it only does that every so often. im just conserned about the thud. could it be hydrolocked? it took on no water and before that i had it running with a hose on it and it was fine. i might add that on the tow back, it flipped on its side but not all the way over. it actually only turned avout a quarter of the way. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!! thanks guys!

Have you done a compression test yet? Pull the plugs, grounding out the plug caps on the grounding studs and see if it turns over easier. It should be at about 150 psi per cylinder. If the compression is ok check the starter next to see if its corroded causing the problem.

check the connection on the starter too, a bad connection can cause these symptoms. make sure the cable is on there snug.

The battery cable is on tight, i checked real quick last night. thats all i had time to do. Ill check for corrosion later but any other ideas?

Karl----Where are the grounding studs at?????

On mine, there are little posts on the front side of the head, with a picture of a spark plug boot on it.

That happend to me on my 91 GT. It was all because the battery wasnt completly charged (showing 13V, but not enough cranking amps) What happens is that it has enough power for the solonoid to function and engage the starter, but doesnt have enough amps to turn the motor over. Try a freshly charged batter and make sure your battery has enough cranking amps. I wont even tell you what i went through, only to find it was the battery:ack:

Towing without a pincher on the water supply hose over 2-3 mph would be like haveing a garden hose on. :stupid: YOU need to get it running ASAP (within 24hr).
Have both Starter & battery load tested to se where ya at.

Ok, i just took the control box apart and hit the coil with a screw driver. it tried to jump but still nothing. so i put it back together and now it just sounds like it did before, like the starter is spinning. i have pleanty of battery power. do i need a coil or a starter??? if a starter, are they hard to install????

not hard to install, just time. IS the motor turning, when hit'n the start button? Remove the sparkplugs, and hit button. Sounds like the starter, though, is going south.

Sounds like the starter is spinning without engaging the engine. Bendix in starter which throws out the gear to engine may be locked up?

I removed the spark plugs and the motor still would not turn over. I am half tempted to replace the coil and see if that works. The coil itself engages when i hit the start button. I also can tell the starter is trying to spin. I kinda am feeling like the motor is locked becuase like i said before, when i hit the start button, it just thuds. I will try to get a video of what it does im sure that will help alot!!!

In my case even though the cables to the starter were tight, there was enough corrosion to not allow enough current. So try to get both cables loose, clean them and terminals with wire brush and/or sandpaper. After i did just the black ground everything worked fine.

Yes I watched the video but could not draw any other conclusions. Now you have confirmed the connectors are clean and tight I will revert back to previous suggestion. Pull the starter and test it. It should do more than just spin I think. In particulat it should throw out the gear toward where it would engage the engine. Yours doesn't seem to be engaging the engine. The coil seems to be doing its job if the starter spins. I doubt it is a broken gear since the problem started when you were running, not when you were starting. Also try to turn the engine over manually from the flywheel PTO to make sure it isn't locked up.

THE MOTOR SPINS!!!!! thank god, so im going to go with a starter and see if thats the issue! thanks guys, any other input is still welcome!!!

Well, when i told my brother to see if the motor spins, he just shook the drive. it moved about an inch either way. I had a buddy come over who works on these and we figured out that the rotary valve had a gash in it and that what it was sticking on...no big deal its a cheap fix. Now the motor spins a bit more and now it is STILL hanging up on something. I guess i will have to pull the motor and take it apart???? it seems as something is wedged in the crank or something. Any ideas?????????
