Hulls Scratches

Hello,

Just bought some new jet skis, and took them out for the first time yesterday with some family members. The water was really rough, and it was really tough to see anything in the water. It was an awsome time, but when i put the them back on the trailer I noticed a really deep scratch on the front of the hull. It does not go all the way through, but exposes the fiberglass shell a little. It is about 3 inches long, and goes into the hull about 1/8 of an inch.

My question is should I run out and get this fixed now, or can something like this wait until the end of the weekend. We are supposed to go out on the water today as well, and I really don't want to let the fam down. What should I do?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Go out and have fun, the repair can wait. When you do the repair and since the fiberglass is exposed, let the hull dry out for 2-3 days. Sand the area a little, clean the area. I use Loctite Marine Epoxy to repair the scratch. You can get it at Lowes, its about $ 6.00. I used it to repair a scratch, into the fiberglass earlier this year, worked great and the repair is still holding.

Yep... what he said.

If you want it to look nice... you can mix in some dry pigment to color the epoxy.

Don't get too stressed about it. Having fun with jetskis will always come with nicks, chips and scratches.

I looooooove Marine-Tex for many different repairs. They have a gray structural epoxy that is hard, extremely high strength, and machinable. I used it for sinking my threaded studs to fix a moron's heili-coil job.

They also produce a white version that is best used for repairs such as yours. They claim that when applied properly the epoxy putty will fill and permanently repair a gap in the fiberglass as well as many other types of things. While the gray comes out almost black and can not be colored, the white cures white and pigment can be added to suit your color needs.
