I have a 1996 Seadoo GTX and it runs great and starts good. I run seafoam through it and good gas and Quicksilver PWC oil. Is there anything else I can do to make it faster and without messing it up?Also is there any tips on making it last long and stay reliable?

Last longer I would leave it stock, and maintain it well. If I was going to try any mod on my GTX i would start with a performance intake grate.

As Rampage said for the most reliable is to leave it stock. Rotax engines put out more HP per CC then any other PWC engine. The manufacture has already pulled out the most power you can get and still maintain reliability/longevity.

That said with a 787 engine you can have the head shaved down just a little to increase compression to about 160PSI, you would still be able to run 87 octane pump gas and gain a little bit of power, while not affecting reliability much if any. You can install aftermarket flame arrestors, a better/aftermarket scoop grate, better/aftermarket prop.

Those items will greatly improve ski with out affecting reliability. Beyond that there isn't much else you can do with out increasing stress on the engine/driveline and reducing reliability.

You'd have a more reliable engine by heavily modding the 787 then you could get even with a STOCK 947!

Not always. I have a stock 951 (98 gtxl), a modified 787 (96 gsx), and a heavily modified 787 (96XP limited class race). The 951 is very powerful. I bought it blown up, built it from the crank up, and has ran great for years. The 787 had to be rebuilt due to a clogged oil filter. It will get dominated by the heavier GTX. The XP (factory pipe, aftermarket carbs, etc.) is very tempermental, and has a tedency to detonate the rear piston. If taken care of, a 951 is not a bad engine.

947/951.

The 951 is... BIGGER... than the 787.. which makes it... more powerful and.. FASTER...

130HP vs 110... 110 is less than 130...

My '98 GTX LTD ran 9 years and 340 hours before sucking in water and blowing up... with a factory 951. so... I don't really consider 9 years of perfect running (not a penny in parts)... that bad for my money...

It was partially a joke, however the 951 does fit a lot of skis... and it's the biggest 2 stroke sea-doo made... therefore even if it's not the 'best'... it's the best for the application.

So, yes if you want a faster GTX, get one with a 951 or do an engine swap :)

Theres no replacement for displacement!
