at the back of the engines where the drive shaft leaves motor, there is a grey like half cone cover that is held on by wing nuts. When running if you you remove the cover, water is spraying in. Is this normal?
On mine when the engine is started with gray cover on, you can see a whirling splash of water under the cover and around it. I am having cavitation problems until I run the boat a while, is my carbon ring shot and that is why more water is coming through?
Jabroni, That carbon seal is a common source of cavitation. Check first to see that there is sufficient pressure from the rubber boot pushing it against the seal. You should be able to pull the carbon back from the seal, but it should be fairly firm and require some decent pressure.
While it is pulled back, see if you can see any wear or chips in the carbon. It should be smooth.
