So, I pulled the engine that randomly shut off last trip out and tore it down. Found the water passages in block were packed full of sand. Any suggestions as to flushing out system? I would like to flush the other engine out without having to tear the jugs off the engine.

My assumption after looking at the engine after it let a rod bearing loose is that it got hot. No obvious bluing of any parts, but the other cylinder looked perfect.(no sand on that side) Rod bearing disintegrated. :banghead:

Anyone have any suggestions as to cleaning the other engine out? Just trying to keep my sanity.

also, while planing at WOT, the engines would both surge. Would rev to 5000 rpm flutter a bit then wind up to 7000. After a few seconds, the RPM's would drop back to about 5000 Any known causes for this? I cant remember if both engines were doing this, but the one that ate the rod bearing was definitely surging.

The surging is that the carbs need cleaned. You are going lean... and that can melt a piston.

The sand... well... don't beach it with the engines running is the first thing. But to clean it... chances are... you will need to remove the head shell to check it out. Sand will pack in, and you will mechanically have to remove it. (shop vac hooked to a thin hose, and a long screwdriver to break it up)

That's what I figured I would have to do, also what I figure I get for not pulling the covers off before running it.

As far as beaching, that's what an anchor and mooring lines are for. The previous owner didn't seem to know too much about the boat. Purely a user and not very mechanically inclined.

Ordered the new engine today and will hopefully be back on the water next weekend.

Good luck with the install.

It always amazes me that I see guys run a seadoo boat, or ski on the shore... and then actually use reverse to get off the beach. That's just asking to kill the engine, and impeller.
