Having trouble with 99 GTX Limited

Also, he wants all the money up front. Is that typical?
OUCH.....$2,700.00.....is a '99 ski worth that much to you? Paying up front is not typical...but considering the circumstances, risk, age, labor involved, pieces and parts...ehhhhh. What if YOU bought the engine and gave it to him to install, etc.....either way....that's a lot of cabbage for a ski that is 20+ years old......

AS much as I hate to say it.....putting $2,700.00 towards a new ski might make more sense....decision time o_O

That's probably not that far off.
SBT engine is $1300+ freight
Reeds and misc $100
Carb kits $130
Parts Total $1,600 ish.

Labor is probably too high.

And I have never seen a shop that charges in full upfront.

So I decided to pull the engine apart myself, send it off for a rebuild, then try to install it myself.

Today I pulled the Rave valves to see if I could gain an idea of what is going on. It looks like the rings have melted on one of the cylinders. The other one looks normal, but has only 110 compression.

Is there any way to tell if I only need a top end, or is it as the shop said that if the top end fails, 99% of the time you need to replace/rebuild the crankshaft?

Found another thing wrong. I am pulling the engine out to send it off to rebuild, and I saw that the line leading to the Rave solenoid was ripped wide open. So it wasn’t getting any pulse. That would explain why it never got over 5600 rpms when it was working.

It’s pretty cool to start to understand how all these things work together.
