the problem im having is when i start from a dead stop and give it full throttle it will run up to 7k on the tack. its like it looses water and it has a hard time jumping out. the boat is a 95 with twin motors it the speedster.not sure what it is.

Common?....

This could be somewhat common. If you are eventually reaching plane, then its probably not the wearing ring, though I would still measure it. Boats this old seem to get a bit beat up with dinged intake grates, impellers and stators. A nick or bent stator vane cane cause the pump to have momentary cavitation.........

Cavitation starts at a vortex that is created from somewhere it shouldn't. Like a nicked inlet grate, dinged impeller or stator that is missing a blade, bent or broken.

I have the 97 Challenger and when I jump on the throttle, it too goes to 7k for a second or so before it begins to hook up. Scooper had this same issue with his boat (the 97 Challenger also) and he bought the new Skat Trak swirl impeller. He swears by it now. He said he's on plane in a couple seconds.

So, though you may find a surface that is dinged or roughed up a bit causing you to vortex and suck air. Or air getting in from your engine compartment at the carbon seal and ring.........it may just be from age. It can be minimized but to make the hull and pumps brand new again....?

thanks for the reply ill do some checking on all the thing mentioned to see what might do the trick. hope everyone have some great boating.

I bought a boat that needed a lot of love… and it had cavitation to the point where it was almost impossible to get it to plane. I had to get someone to sit up in the nose to get it to plane out… if I turned too hard… it would fall out.

I took the pump out, and replaced the carbon seal, cut off the shaft protector, and installed a Skat-Trak 16-21 swirl. Now, the boat will not cavitate, even from a stop and I smash it to full throttle. my sportster with a single 720, and 3 people in it will get up on a plane in a few seconds. BTW… my wear ring is beat up, and still needs replaced… so, I would say the Skat-Trak swirl is a wise investment in fun.

The recommended prop for my boat was a 15-20 swirl, but I got a good deal on the 16-21. (NOS) I plan on taking the GPS with me next time out. The boat feels fast, and I would estimate that I’m running in the 40’s.

Just my 2 cents.
