Hand Fatigue

Am I the only one whose hands kill them after riding for like an hour or two. I have both throttle types on two different skis. The brake pull type and the thumb throttle. I'm 26, I wear gloves and after an day of riding I literally can barely turn the key in my truck to start it. Its like it sucks all the strength out of my hands.

I use only one or two fingers for my throttle. Seems to make it more comfortable. Trade fingers throughout the day. My hands are find at the end if the day.

The thumb throttle used to bother me more than the finger did, but I've been riding for quite a few years now and I experience zero fatigue even after 3-4 hours now, I guess I'm used to it.

Both of my ski's now have the finger, and I do tend to "cruise" on flat water with 2 fingers and "hop" in chop or rough water with only one finger to have a better grip on the handlebars, and that helps somewhat.

If your fairly new to the sport I might say your hand will get stronger over time.

If your not new, then i'm guessing maybe that your spending a lot of your time with a heavy throttle, jamming to high rpm's maybe a little to much, or too often ?

I've learned over time to relax both hands quite a bit when its not necessary to have a hard grip, ie: cruising.. And that does help as well, occasionally I catch myself gripping too strong when its not necessary and have to force myself to relax and let the ski do the work, most of the time I'm just guiding the ski along the path.

I'm not saying that you need to drive in a straight line more, but maybe that you can just relax your grip a bit more frequently when not heading into a hard turn.

Not sure if that helps.

I do a lot of straight away driving. I think I'm just gripping the heck out of the bar subconsciously. I've got several skis and this is the first time I've experienced this. Although it has been roughly a year since I'd rode a lot

I ripped my forearm to elbow muscles the first time I rode my RXP on Lake Powell. Jumping 6ft wakes off of the tour boats and yachts flat out. Took about a month to heal, but still had a smile on my face.

ive noticed that the thumb throttle is very... for the lack of a better word... big... in all aspects.. after a couple hours its a little tough to wrap my little thumb around the throttle and squeeze.. on my buddies 130 the throttle is very nice.. small and it fits in the bend of my fingers nicely.

.. i feel a finger throttle coming very soon for my ski

I feel like I also need to get some fingerless gloves instead of using my wakeboarding ones. I think they're making my hands have to stretch even more.

i cant ride with gloves in general.. once they get wet, i need to take them off... reminds me of when you get your socks wet and then have to walk around all day with squishy feet..

Next time you are out, periodically check how tight your grip is... You may be using a death grip on the handles without realizing how tight you are holding on... When I first started riding, my hands were killing me until I realized how tight I was holding on.... Relax the hands. If it is pain not on your entire hand but localized pain you feel if simulate pulling the throttle when you notice the pain, this is muscular strength issue as your body does not normally use those muscles in this fashion day to day and will get better as you get more riding time. One of those old fashion grip exerciser gadgets may help as well...
