All you have to do is rub your finger on the bottom of the elbow fitting. if there is oil on it, that is MOST LIKELY to be the cause!

Just had a read of this thread from the beginning.
I think you made the right decision to walk away. A low hour 4 stroke is what I would also recommend for your needs.
I have the exact same leak in the oil tank. I lost about $50.00 of XPS oil. As long as there was enough oil in the tank, the leak would not have caused the engine failure.
