GSXL 5A Troubleshooting

I have story which mirrors many others on this site but I thought I would throw it out to the experts.

I purchased this 951 about 2 weeks ago in great physical condition with 84 hours on the hobbs. The price was right but the battery was too low to start before i took it home. As it turned out the seller and I have a mutual friend so I took his word all it needs is a battery. When I got it home I connected my battery charger with engine start... It beeped and cranked then everything went dead-.. You guessed it, blown 5A fuse. Now after reading up on every post here and on the Internet I wasn't able to find much on troubleshooting the MPEM itself. I have ohmed out everything mentioned on these sites but have yet to identify a short. I also found some posts from the person who repairs MPEMs but it doesn's appear he repairs the one for a 98 - 951.

Has anyone found how to test the MPEM to determine if it is really bad or is my only option to replace it ( I hate being a parts changer).

If you cranked it over , while hooked to a charger... there is a 95% chance you blew the diode in the MPEM. (that is a big no-no in the world of SeaDoo)


The was a thread that just showed up again on how to change the diode in an MPEM with for a 951 engine.

You are probably right in thinking the diode is blown but I was trying to determine a way to actually perform a test on the MPEM (other than blowing 5amp fuses) that would show it was a particular diode.

I measured every fuse input and output and was able to locate at least 3 different diodes intact from the 5A fuse (right side of fuse looking down from the top as it mounts in the hull) to 7 different terminals feeding the cable connectors including; 2-16, 2-17, 2-23, 3-13, 3-15, 3-22, and 3-25. I wasn't able to see any shorts to ground without power to any of the fuses.

I am thinking that the diod that is blowing may be from the 5a fuse to connector 2-16 because this is a grounded lead to the MPEM but this diode appears to be intact. (I need verification of this)

If this is fact the diode that normally blows it may be repairable externally and this it what I am researching while trying to repair my ski.

Completed further testeng

The diode i am measuring on my MPEM reads about 1.9 ohms so it does appear to be bad. My current question is directed to anyone that has repaired their 1998 MPEM.

Does anyone have a schamatic or know where I can pick one up for this particular MPEM or know if anything is fed from this fuse before the diode? I will try adding an external diode between the 5A fuse and the fuse terminal to see if this will resolve the issue. This is a shot in the dark without a schamatic but well worth a try since it appears the unit is bad already. If successful there will be a easy low-cost fix for others to use.

Also, i just ordered a replacement diode based on the part number from another MPEM repaired on this forum in 2009 (which is a little different design than my MPEM)

Any thoughts out there?
