Gauges won't power off 96xp

So after a day of riding. Close to about 33 miles of good solid riding and no issues with my ski. Ran flawless all day. Come back to the dock to gas up and head back out. Notice my gauges won't turn off and all the warning lights are illuminated.

Oh well it starts and runs fine so off we go. Nothing looks suspicious and Google searching found only 2-3 people having this problem and none with a fix other than to just unplug the battery or gauges.

Both VTS and multi gauge stay on. I unhooked the big connector and they went off. Plugged it back in and they came back on.

No amount of pushing the start button does anything. Only thing I noticed was there appeared to be some moisture in the multi gauge today that I haven't seen before.

Any thoughts?

To fix the problem you will most likely need a "new" MPEM. Here's what I would do, ride it like it is until the end of season, and disconnect the battery between uses. This winter send the MPEM to Nick Minnetonka4me, have him test it. If bad get a good used one from him.

That seemed to be the only suggestions of people in the other threads I found too, but appears no one tried it. Was hoping to avoid the mpem replacement, but guess we'll see.

Or........just thinking, I know pretty dangerous, if that's the only problem, what about installing a switch or a relay on the positive feed wire (purple, I think), the gauges +12v is daisy chained, and just turning them off when not in use.

That's a good possibility. Whoever had my hood previously cut out "speed holes" in the hatch underneath. So I can quickly plug and unplug it easily. So going to do that for now. At the lake all weekend so def not letting this mess up my riding. :)

Hah, I guess it's fixed, with two great minds working on it what did you expect?

Which is good, cause I broke 2 bolts in my intake grate, ugh! I just took it off and continued riding for the day. Rough weekend for my ski. Hah!

I'll chime in here, as I have had this same issue. As soon as I would connect the battery, every light and gauge on the dash would stay on, but the ski wouldn't do anything. Thinking I had an MPEM issue, I swapped in another unit I had. Same result. I then proceeded to unplug the start/stop switch, with no luck. I tried numerous other things and replaced every stitch of electrical up to the motor with functioning spares I had. As a last ditch effort I returned everything back to original (MPEM and all) and swapped the magneto cover on the motor in order to get a pickup I knew was good and oddly enough it fixed the issue.

Yours wouldn't run at all? Cause mine runs perfectly fine. With out without the gauge issue.

Its usually the MPEM....the on board relay sticks and the accessories circuit stays on. It happens alot on the 97 GSI.

There's some "timeout" relay, correct? I've read a little about that while doing some searching. Maybe it was sticking due to me riding the bejeebus outta it on Sat. LOL! Then unplugged the gauges and let it sit overnight. Then for Sun we were just cruising around.

how did you know you broke two bolts in your intake grate?

We were just swimming around in the water taking a look at our skis. Can't remember the exact conversation but it caused me to reach up and grab my intake grate. When I did....I noticed it was loose. I said SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT and we headed back to the dock to put it up on the lift and see what the deal was. Turned out ONE bolt was loose and that's it. In my infinite wisdom I decided I wanted to reposition the grate and then tighten down all the bolts. Unscrew the back 2 to loosen them up, no problem. One screw was kind of buggered so I wanted to get it out and replace it while I was down there. Go to loosen the front to screws and SNAP......there goes one......SNAP there goes the other. Wellllll fukkkkkkk me. We still had a few hours of riding left to do so I just took it off and we went riding.

crazy... did you notice any performance issue with it off?

Other than how awesome it is without one......nope! The intake grate that was in there is def not for top speed. It was noticeably faster. Sketchy part is sucking up big things and destroying my prop or wear ring.

now I have to figure out how I'm gonna go about fixing that issue. The bolts are just so tiny I'm not sure I could even get an "easy out" type thing in there. Thinking about just drilling them out and then through bolting the intake grate.

Likely just gonna ride it the way it is the rest of this season.
