Gas Guage 2002 XP

I determined that my gas guage now says full no matter what the real level in the tank is. (oil light works fine)

Do I start with the guage or the sensor?

How can I tell if either is telling the truth?

The dealer had to pull the baffle I guess to get water out of the tank (I bought it used, someone else took it to dealer to get a new engine).

from what I've read on google, it appears the sending unit is most likely at fault.

before I buy, I plan to check the ohms on my current one i guess and see if it's the failure, but that's a lot of work to pull it apart just to check that.. pita working on something so small / tight.
